Hathway’s new package makes Sify Broadband look sad

I read this article according to which Hathway is providing a new package range labeled ‘Silver Super Rush’ which provides connectivity in the region of 512kbps for as low as 250 bucks a month. Now, Sify as far as I know does not even have packages in 512kbps range for consumers.

Talk about being a broadband provider… Though I would have to get better information on how do they manage the data transfer limit. I doubt they would be giving more than a 100-200 megs in this price… Any ideas?

Update: Sify Broadband definitely needs to rethink their packages…

The Silver Super Rush is Rs. 3000 for a year with a download limit of 2.4GB after which you pay Rs.2.00 per MB. I am dreaming download costs will come down to about Rs. 0.25 per MB…

I heard AirTel is good and they seem to be the most cost effective. Hathway is one of the better broadband providers as far as cost is concerned.

Hathway Data Services are Pathetic and their customer service makes the treatment fetted to you by any government servant look like acts by the gods. I have taken Hathway Broadband. The service is down most of the time and their customer representatives fume at me for complaining. They themselves have acknowledged that hathway is pathetic. STAY OUT OF HATHWAY GUYS……….

Not sure who have been lucky with Hathway, but it was definitely a big disappointment for me. I could not use 2 laptops since connectivity gets stuck to the first MAC. On repeated complaints Hathway could not fix the problem. Even with the one laptop, the connection was erratic and many times would be unavailable for hours. Called customer support - but no avail.

When I ‘disconnected’ after calling their support, they were happy to send me bills without fail, this went on till 11 months after disconnection. It took 2 emails, couple of calls and one stern warning to take this issue to consumer court for them to stop billing me when they weren’t providing me service.

Phew !! Now you are warned of Hathway.

In my opinion, there are no good service providers for Broadband Internet right now in India. Countries like Chile have customers taking speeds ranging from 1024 kbps for even residential usage. But, if you’re an Airtel user, its the worst. May be Reliance would do the job for you but the Reliance war of the brothers is making consumers think twice before they buy any one of the three Reliance broadband connections that are offered. I think since India is the best in IT, consumers must be given higher speeds starting from 512 kbps to 1024 kbps & not 64 kbps, which is nothing in today’s times. For God sake, we’re passed that historic & medieval ages of using Broadband speeds betwee 64 to 256 kbps, which are nothing compared to the speeds being offered in Europe, South America, Australia, China, Middle East, South Korea, Southeast Asia & Japan.

I often experience very poor upload speeds with Hathway. This makes it impossible to use VOIP - and even sending emails with small attachments difficult. See speed test results at linked page. (http://www.geocities.com/slarnold/hathway.png)

As rightly said by Anjan there is no GOOD broadband service in India and secondly the Customer Service culture does not exist in India. It is only the consumer who suffers. There are no policies in India and even if they are made there is no implementation. The rules/law breached left and right and should something take place it is hushed up filling the pockets of Politicians. It is only the time which pushes things ahead. So it is wait n watch. Hope for bright future.

I’m tired of the Hathway customer service and want to seriously take up the matter of wrong billing and erratic service with their senior management and, if needed, then to the consumer court. Can someonee suggest who in Hathway (any contact no. would help) can I approach first? Also any referrals for the consumer court? thanks

i have had a mixed experience with sify broadband, sometimes on 64 kbps unlimited package they give 96 and currently 128kbps speed but on other days you cant even get connected
morever that sh***y 150 mb per day download limit doesn’t seem to make life easier.

In my opinion DSL based connections are particularly good coz few of my friends have airtel 128kbps unlimited connection and surprisingly download speed seldom goes below 20.you can say grass is greener on the other side ,still i think airtel is worth a try

I’m tired of the Hathway customer service I took thier OL 24/7 it was 800 rs per month unlimited usage and i prepaid 8000 rs for the full year (mar05-mar06) i,e 2 months discount this was in March 05.

In aug 05 they reduced and named a new package called thruway for 500rs It was exactly the same package but they said this package does not apply to me since i have prepaid.

Let me come to the next complaint.
Since aug 05 when they introduced the new package i have been suffering a lot of downtime in my 24/7 package which they promissed. Finally when i complained they said they would extend the package by my downtime days. around 2 months back i submitted my downtime which was around 46 full days i.e these are days when it was down the whole day + another 30 days or so of downtime when it was partly down…….

Now what does hathway do …. they tell me my credit is only 29 days and guess what the billing dept says the tech dept has given the number of days and the tech dept says the billing dept has calculated it wrongly……

finally on 3rd febuary 2006 they tell me the cable has cut and the accounts dept is finallising my acount for the year… pssst i have paid till 18 mar 06 …… and i can take a credit of the money for the next payment >:) now how many days credit do they give me ??? take it or leave it….

today is 6th feb 2006 and i am still waiting for them to tell me how much is my credit, if someone in hathway is reading or someone who wants to take hathway to consumer court call me on +91 9845165512

Someone said broadband access service in India is pathetic. Wrong. There is NO broadband access service in India. 256kbps does not make broadband. In the bellwether USA (at least, for Internet access services), 256kbps comes in what is termed as the “Narrowband service” range. Narrowband is rides atop a voice-grade vehicle. ISDN is a Narrowband service. Although the terms defy exact definition (not even the FCC is consistent in this regard), it is generally accepted that Narrowband access service is between 56 kbps and 1 Mbps and Broadband is above 1 Mbps (broadband maybe delivered via regular copper twisted pair - although more robust/closer to home/free of crap - or coaxial or fiber or wireless). There are ofcourse some (particularly the demanding geeks like us) who would push it even further by qualifying broadband access as something that not only delivers 1 meg+ but is also “always on” and “2-way”.

Coming back to the point about TRAI, they are just a bunch of tired old goons that are just “safehoused” for their service to the government - not to the people. Despite the occasional jaunts to ITU in Geneva, these grimy bureaucrats don’t really listen and learn there. We know why they go there. We are given shit and we have no choice. Pretty much like our film censor board. But we never complain about the bollywood, tollywood, etcwood trash, do we? We get what we pay for…. All the “Rung de Bas…” is just opium, isn’t it?
