India unveils 3G policy… BSNL and MTNL get the advantage

The Indian government has finally unveiled the much awaited 3G policy for the country.

The announcement was good news for the government owned telecom companies BSNL and MTNL.

Both these companies have been allotted one slot across the board for 3G. They would not be required to enter the bidding with the private players.

The new policy also allows the overseas players to bid for the 3G spectrum in the Indian market.

The government aims to allow five players in each circle for 3G rollout.

The minimum reserve price has been set at Rs 2,020 crore. The government would not charge anything for usage for 3G for the first year. From second year, the charges would be 1 per cent of gross revenue.
