Sify Broadband blocking NNTP servers

Google defines Usenet as ‘A worldwide bulletin board system that can be accessed through the Internet or through many online services. The USENET contains more than 14,000 forums, called newsgroups, which cover every imaginable interest group.’ It is a great resource of information and an incredible channel to discuss variety of topics.

Does it sound like something that only corporates do? Because Sify Broadband has apparently decided to block NNTP ports which are used to access the Usenet by normal users. A mail sent to Sify’s Customer Support got me the following response:

I would like to confirm that blocking the same is as per our standard policy .This port is blocked for residential users using retail broadband services.

In addition, they offered me corporate products if I was interested in accessing the NNTP servers.

We also do have suitable corporate solutions where we can have this port accessible for you. I can have the details sent if you are keen on the same.

From the information accessible to me, most ISPs around the world run their own NNTP servers for their customers. This let them conserve on bandwidth with local caching. I am yet to find a local ISP that offers NNTP servers. However, they have always been accessible from American based servers. However, Sify Broadband is the first case where they have simply disabled the service for no good reason.

If this was not bad, there are reports that Airtel Broadband is blocking IRC Servers, another common web service because of virus attacks. Rather unfortunate when they call their services broadband.

Sify are a bunch of malformed losers. Even the people they outsource their marketing to are misinformed. They call up and say “our 256Kbps line will give you 256 Kbps downloads” I go like, do you understand my question about realistic downloads speeds I can expect about compressed files? He goes like, “Yes sir, my senior has assured me that you will get 256Kbps”. This prick actually started asking me what my “experience” was when i told him this was not possible. Retards, I tell you, stay away from such idiots. BSNL offers zero support, but they don't make a stance of “We are CCISP's”. The guys honestly tell you they dunno stuff, and I for one don't care, I don't need their support. But I can see how that might be an issue for new users. Point is, they don't take the liberty of blocking any service for me, that's like giving me a car and saying the keys to dash are only for corporate customers. Whoever decided that policy in Sify with regards to NNTP needs to go back to school, maybe get out of the house (read south india) more, and understand what ISP's are supposed to do.
If there is one thing I cannot stand more than ignorance is the pretence of being educated.

I agree with this. I just don't know why these things happen.
They also blocked POP mail access and SMTP access like to
    pop.hotpop.com and smtp.hotpop.com
Does this fall under blockign right to have access to internet
resources ? Is there any genuine reson for blocking those port
    accesses ?
Also if somebody gives same access via http port, will there be
any reason to block that too ?
    Just feeling sad!
I just wanted to have an offline access to news articles in
comp.arch.* etc technical stuff. Seems like there is no
    way out!
