Online Petition asking for ‘Real Broadband’ in India

Indian users of the Internet have long been fed with crappy deals by the Internet Service Providers. Most are happy to have just the basic connectivity considering the huge size of this country means, there are still a large area, where people do not have food to eat and roof to stay under.

However, this does not mean they do not deserve to get genuine broadband! We started a fight with this Blog and the forum. Some joined in with real lawsuits. You want to be a part of it? Start by signing this online petition started by Venkatesh Sridhar. It goes something like this:

We, the customer of so called “Broadband” services provided by the so called “Broadband” Internet Service Providers (ISPs) petition you to take action against these ISPs for not providing broadband connections yet marketing their services as broadband that is misleading the consumers and bringing disrepute to broadband.

We would like to bring to your notice that TRAI has defined a broadband service as “An always-on data connection that is able to support various interactive services, and has the capability of a minimum download speed of 256 Kbps”. When these ISPs provide connections at 40 Kbps how can they claim it to be broadband. We want TRAI to take action against such ISPs. We would also like to remind TRAI that the broadband sector will not grow if such unscrupulous service providers are allowed to cheat consumers.

We hope TRAI in the interest of consumers and the future of broadband services in India takes an efficient and quick action and regularizes broadband services in India.

Indeed provate operators like Sify and AirTel are suckers - they dont offer ever what they promise besides cheating potential on billing as they do with telephones. TATA is trying to be fair to customer; they have a huge problem with the excess baggage vsnl they have acquired; until they find a solution for that they cant be in credible broadband space. As usual Reliance is fighting dirty on pricing but lock the customer for a long time & then suck him midway by withdrawing initially promised 'included' service; no one can do anything with these bullies who bribe every arm of bureaucracy & ministry & justice delivery mechanism if there is one.
Bsnl has given a good run for thier money on these private cheaters, by introducing DataONE. Their Home500 plan is a gem. But basic download limit of 1GB per month & add on 2Rs per MB is robbery. They should drop this rate to 40p & retain all customers they have aquired silently thru performance & give one good kick once and for all to private cheaters.
