Broadband at Rs. 500 from BSNL-MTNL

Broadband at Rs. 500 from BSNL-MTNL
Dialup users in the metros would be happy to know that Government bodies BSNL and MTNL would be rolling out their broadband services from the 15th of next month. They are planning to offer packages with speeds of 256kbps with rates starting from Rs. 500. However, no details are available yet on what kind of limits these companies would apply.
The services would be launched in New Delhi and Mumbai by MTNL and Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad by BSNL. More cities would be covered in the coming months. Communications Minister, Dayanidhi Maran told a parliamentary group: “Though the 256 Kbps costs 3,000 rupees in the market, the telecom public sector undertakings have agreed to provide the same services at Rs 500 a monthâ€.
Their main competition would come from Airtel Broadband and Reliance who are currently active in limited areas. Other players in the market like Sify Broadband are also going to be affected. They sell their 256kbps packages for around 2500 rupees with data transfer limit of 1GB. Users can expect the current players to drop down the prices to compete with these low rates from the major telecom players.

Hi,
First of all let me thank you for your support to the petition. The idea came after I saw how many ppl like me are also frustrated about it. Well I checked MTNL’s site and in the Broadband services section I checked the tariffs find them at http://mumbai.mtnl.net.in/internetservices/adsl... I do not know whether this is the same thing coz its under the broadband section. Well a good news for DoT has been given the responsibility of Broadband in India so I think the cheats wud b caught pants down… :D

Hi,
You have talked about mtnl bsnl broadband services, but let me tell u onething they work on ADSL portocol and their was also a news in the media that ADSL is capable of transfering huge data on copper line and so the ISP like mtnl and bsnl do not need to make huge investments to upgrade their infrastrucutre. It was talked about that broadband is going to be really cheap because of this and this was opposed by all major private ISP providers. They even went to court on this matter. As far as i know ADSl (http://www.dslforum.org/aboutdsl/adsl_tutorial….) falls shareware category and so no charges need to be paid to any company for its commercial usaage.
But i think goverment and public sector ISP’s have buckled under pressure from the private sector and are charging to high for their broadband then it should be. So I dont think either TRAI or goverment is going to help a layman in this matter.

Raju

I think ISPs in India specially in Mumbai are big cheats.
Companies like SIFY and Pacenet should be dragged to consumer courts

I just checked the mtnl website regarding their offer of providing broadband services at Rs 500/- a month. There is no mention of it and their tariff also don’t indicate the above scheme. Mabbe they might upgrade their website to reflect it after their launch on 15th Jan.
Also expecting unlimited downloads at 256kbps at Rs 500/- a month is asking too much. I think it will be 100 MB per month download cap for 256 kbps line for the lowest tariff which is decent. Higher bandwidth users will have to cough up extra as per usage. This is my point of view ofcoarse. I am tired of using this dialup connection and am waiting for the mtnl broadband launch.

BSNL has been touting its broadband scheme as “the real broadband”. I hope they don’t do something as pointless as marketing DataOne as a “revolutionary” broadband service, and then charging on a per-mb basis. Broadband is unusable with bandwidth caps.

The tarrif rates have been announced – it is Rs. 500/- per month for 1GB at 256 kbps. Almost too good to be true. Speeds range from 256 kbps to 2 mbps. I wonder if they will actually turn out to be that high. The pricing however is exceptionally good. It works out at around 33 paise per MB for some schemes.

hey, anyone using TATA Broadband Connection. Those who are using just for checking mail or chatting or even for downloading hundreds of mb files can use this connections. They r providing very good service and speed also. Its more than 256 Kbps at any time. I can download a 270 mb file (XP-SP2) in just 10 minutes. Its is depends on the traffic on that particular site also. You can check the tarrif plan at http://www.tataindicombroadband.com. But main drawback is that they are using existing network in your area (if available) which is very disappointing because local internet provider does not have good network infrastructure like switches.Instead of that local providers are mostly useing poor poor hubs (price contious). Still I am happy with TATA.

The service from BSNL/MTNL is based on ADSL 2.0 technology. That by itself means a lot. I do not think the service from Tata Indicomm is anywhere near a match for the service being offered by BSNL/MTNL.
January 29th, 2005 at 10:09 pm
well i would say that people don’t care abt the technology as long as they are getting a good product. and bsnl has not delivered what was expected off them.

Knowing the government of India, the officer-in-charge of affairs and the red-tapism that is a common place scenario, BSNL has done better than VSNL/Tata Indicomm. The kind of geographies BSNL has to serve VSNL/MTNL can never match, add to that the technical cart and techno savvy customers that VSNL/MTNL enjoy. BSNL has many more odds to fight against than VSNL/MTNL. I find the effort being put by BSNL. Its high time that we overcome typical Indian mindset of criticising things without knowing about them.
Here you can read about the technology and then possibly appreciate what BSNL is bringing to us: http://in.rediff.com/money/2005/jan/28spec1.htm
As for the shortcomings, lets give them constructive feedback and positive support and lets keep our fingers crossed. We Indians are one step away from experiencing real broadband service at affordable price for the first time in our history.

Besides Tata Indicom Broadband, its even the govt owned MTNL which is fooling the public. Look at their ads for their ambitious venture TriBand. The ads proudly proclaim the surfing time as unlimited. But sir, we are not ignorant fools here. A 500 MB limit with a 256 Kbps speed, can easily get over within a span of a few odd hours (about 4.5 hours max), assuming you download data @256 Kbps or 32 KB/sec. So they are cleverly masking their services by showing unlimited time, but restricted data download. However, you have to give MTNL and BSNL credit for creating a ripple. The strangest part is MTNL offers 750 MB for 750 Rs. + Rs. 80 for CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) + Service tax @ 10.2%, whereas the other govt baby BSNL offers 1 GB of downloads for Rs. 500 plus service tax @ 10.2%. Why is there so much difference? Has anyone noticed that? It just gets more pathetic and a rip off.

We recently got MTNL adsl service. On and off the connection get cut off. For the past hree days – there is not a byte to be had. And their helpline is most unhelpful. Go figure. These bums are even bigger scammers than Enron. When it works (rare), the speed is better than advertised. But then what good is it – if its mostly “not on”?

I have taken a BSNL connection under Home-500 plan. The good thing is it has a very good speed. I also have a Sify Broadband connection which averages about 10% of its promised performance, and is down on an average 10 days in a month. However, at BSNL , no one seems to know how to service the consumer. First of all, to date, I did not get to know the Outgoing Mail server settings I need to use to configure my company mail account in Outlook express. If I call the Call center, they ask me to call the local JE, the local JE directed me to different numbers, ultimately, no one seems to know what it is even. Anytime I call up, someone sleepy answers the call and gives ridiculous advise. In One instance, the person said I am supposed to do only browsing and not get into extra things like ‘tampering’ with my outlook express etc.,
Since the past 4 days my internet has been down. I have been running from pillar to post (on phone), but the problem is unresolved. I am of the opinion that these guys don’t have any idea of what the problem could be even. They are waiting for the problem to resolve on its own, or for me to tire of complaining. I shall relate what happened today. I called up the JE office and insisted I speak to the JE. When I told him my telephone number, he said ” yes, we know this number, in fact we called you in the afternoon” I said” yes I know you people called, but the problem is not yet resolved”. JE’s reply : we do not have the skill to do anything on this. Did u ever get to log in the connection ?” When I said” I have been using this since the past one month and faced no problem, but since the past 4 days I am not able to connect, he was totally surprised that “DATAONE worked for you for one month ???? You are very lucky then…”
This is the state of affairs in our country. All these guys need to be fired and the whole department should be privatised. Then they will sit and work properly.

MTNL / BSNL started the broadband work recently and the work going on at high speed (broad band way :) ). as the installation work is still in progress for some time there may be disconnection of internet. but after the network get stabilized probably taking another 1 month max the service will be best. ofcourse as the MTNL/BSNL has still the govt kind of working culture there wont be any propmt and good response for the problelms faced by the customer. but everything gets steam line in due course.
but the speed is the ultimate. if u want a 4mbps u can get that but ofcourse cost is high. and one thing for checking mail and browsing the doestn come under the data download limit. so no charging

Height of miscommunication
I recently applied for the BSNL broadband home 500 scheme, firstly after doing a fiseability chk, they sent a demand note which we intantly paid. Then next day i got a call from a line man he said the wiring for broadband is done and the modem will b installed in next 1-2 days. Then after getting no response for 1 week i called them – they said we r setting up an optical link and the connection will be available in 2 weeks (but how the hell i got a call of wiring being done). Then the next day a guy came with a modem and did the entire setup in 5 mins :)
Apart from that the download speeds starts from aroung 150 KBPs and drops to around 25 KBPs. Just wanted to ask BSNL users thru this forum that is this normal with the BSNL connection and do they also face the same probs.

Hi,
Satyam Info Way (SIFY http://www.sify.com/ and http://www.satyam.com) are a bunch of lousy cheats! My friend bought a “Unlimited” dial up pack from
a shop in Bangalore of 300 odd bucks. Apparently “Unlimited” in sify
terminology implies “Unlimited usage for 6 hours”.
He was surprised after configuring his modem, at finding his usage at
1/2 an hour on a brand new pack. He called up Sify. They told him
that every connect/disconnect was billed at 5 minutes!
If he exceeded the 6 hour limit he would then be penalized..not sure
but i think he lost 1 day of usage..

Hi All,
I am using BSNL Broadband connection since last 4 days. I am using Internet since long back.
But this speed is really amaizing. I have 256 Kbps home plane.
I want to tell something to user of high speed internet connection users and also to BSNL and MTNL Administration and Policy makers and TRAI Guys,
Why there is limitation of just 1 GB on 256 Kbps home plan?
dont you think if you just open open 3 browser in a minutes and browser or click 5 times a minute through different link and pages than how much bandwidth is getting use.
3 browser x 5 click = 15 x 50 Kbps per page = 750 Kbps per minute.
If an average user goes through NewsPaper site, Multimedia site and other sites than if we measure bandwitdh with http://www.abeltronica.com/velocimetro/pt/?idioma=uk&newlang=uk and see than it download almost 600 Kb in 19 – 20 sec. so what is usage of this.
An ideal or heavy user can finish in a day time of his Bandwidth quota.
I think atleast they should give 5 GB this is my suggestion.
GUYS LOOK THIS !!!!! THIS IS KILLING ONCE ADDICTED.
TRAI guys look into this, we are not US, or Korea where if they dont have job another day they have GOVT. by their side. Here we have to earn anyhow to survive.
This charges Kills business, ideas, generation to go ahead.
Just look into this

If an average user goes through NewsPaper site, Multimedia site and other sites than if we measure bandwitdh with http://www.abeltronica.com/velocimetro/pt/?idio... and see than it download almost 600 Kb in 19 – 20 sec. so what is usage of this.

Hi,
For a user like me, who keeps the machine on, all day & night for downloading stuff… these MTNL/BSNL plans wont work. They should come up with some unlimited packages. Infact, they can do that, but these people (MTNL/BSNL) want to earn money…
Anyways… hoping that one day… they’ll come up with an “unlimited downloads” plan.
Cheers!

Initially, I thought browsing is free for 24 hours, but now came to know that BSNL is charging for every webpage and click. This is like cheating as many private chit companies did some years ago. For any kind of user, this 1 GB limit will be crossed easily within a short span. I think BSNL will definitely face a drawback after giving bill for the month of July to its customers. If BSNL comes with an unlimited pack as most other service providers do, it would be helpful for users like me. I hope BSNL will have soon with good pack.

Thomas

Dear friends,
The speed of BSNL broad band is amazing. But i think the 1 GB wont be suffiecient. Most people will try and stop using broad band due to thier limited usage and GB.

I had a question. Is BSNL broadband an always on connection ie do I have to login using PPOPE. Another question is whether I need a computer to initially configure the service. I dont have computer and I need the broadband because my primary use will be VOIP.

In response to message 29 in this thread:
How does 5 clicks in each of three browser windows 15×50Kbps per page? Each click will require some amount of data transfer for the HTTP GET request but this will usually be less than 1KB including all the headers. The responses including headers could be 50KB, could be less and could be more. Watch: 50Kb and 50KB are not same! Uppercase b means bytes whereas the lowercase is bits (8-times smaller than a byte). Okay, accepting that the average response of a web page will transfer 50KB of data, adding 1KB of request header, it amounts to 51KB of data transferred during this procedure. Now are you going to do 15 such requests in one minute. If yes, then you’re not actually reading the page :-) (you said it is a news website)…
Anyway, I will try to get to the point. Yes, the 1GB bandwidth per month is extremely limited. Broadband users in India should raise a proper public opinion (supported with technical reasons) to pursue the providers to change this limit. However, who told you that in the US or Korea if you lose a job then the government is by your side? In welfare states like the UK, many of the European nations, the government pays a minimum survival money but that’s far too low by any middle class standard, which means if you’re a middle class person losing a job then you’re really in trouble. Don’t think there aren’t beggars in the US… they are just hidden from the posh areas in the cities.
If you have a problem with the broadband, try to focus on getting that problem solved. Don’t associate with other frustrations and believe in a rosy western dream. Life is not easy anywhere in the world. It just always looks greener on the other side! ;-)

Okay, how much are you paying BSNL? If, for example, you’re on the Rs 500 home plan, then your transfer rate is 256Kbps. I am not sure if bandwidth on-demand is supported on that plan. You need to check the plan you’re on and then check http://www.calcutta.bsnl.co.in/tariff_broadband.shtml for the appropriate transfer bandwidth you’re getting. Also remember ADSL is asymmetric. Therefore, the upload and download speeds are different but then again, uploads only amount to may be 5% of the downloads during normal internet use (web browsing, emailing using webmail, etc.).
To check your accounts and the total amount of data transfer you’ve done so far, go to http://www.sancharnet.in/dataoneredirect.htm while connected to your broadband service or http://10.240.43.216/ (only using the broadband connection), login using your username and password and you’ll be able to see your usage statistics.

This guys (BSNL) are providing quiet good speed that is not a question. But go to http://www.nytimes.com and open the multimedia in POP-UP and see the flash work there.
If you just open 3 – 5 Multimedia with Voice than it will be get opened in a 5 min. but than bandwidth
ohhhhhhhhh all hell broke looooooose.
you will be starved at the end of week that what to do for next 24 days than.
I think BSNL and TRAI should think of Development and not just Lolly Pop of telling and showing what is BroadBand.
Any need to go.
Talk more some another time.

5 minutes of multimedia streaming at a maximum of 256Kbps (unless you get on-demand bandwidth) equals to 9.375MB of data: ((256/8) x 5 x 60)/1024, which is 0.92% (approx) of the 1GB bandwidth limit. Not that bad :-P If you’re not streaming at 256Kbps, then the situation is different. Although if you were having a streaming video at 784Kbps (say) and your maximum download rate is 256Kbps, then the stream will be buffered by the client.
Anyway, I completely agree with you that the bandwidth limit is too low. Even 5GB is not good enough, but then 256Kbps at Rs 500 a month is a bit too good as well. How can TRAI be made aware of this such that BSNL changes its policies? Is there any sort of medium through which public opinion can be built?

If you’re sure that you’re going to use more than 0.4GB bandwidth per month, then don’t go for the Rs 250 per month 256Kbps BSNL broadband. It’s really for people that are not Internet freaks but need a steady Internet connection to keep in touch with people – emailing, chatting a bit may be, etc. The 0.4GB limit is ridiculous. If one is updating Windows XP to Service Pack 2 by downloading it off the Internet, that alone accounts to about half that bandwidth limit. The limit needs to be raised to at least 10 to 15GB per month.

Sorry to know about your problems. Please check BSNL documentation properly. I have already mentioned above “to check your accounts and the total amount of data transfer youâ??ve done so far, go to http://www.sancharnet.in/dataoneredirect.htm while connected to your broadband service or http://10.240.43.216/ (only using the broadband connection), login using your username and password and youâ??ll be able to see your usage statistics”. I admit that the user interface is terrible with no usability consideration; and poor use of backend technologies to display the usage statistics.
I agree that 1GB bandwidth limit is too low for Internet users that do more than emailing and browsing a bit. I am not a BSNL staff but users definitely have to use forums like this to make BSNL feel the urgency of increasing the bandwidth limit.

My Broadband connection was installed on Aug.8, 2005. Since then my telephone rarely rang. Good many complaints were received from my friends and well wishers saying that I was always out and telephone never responded. The fact is that there was one or the other person all the time. I compalined to the fault repair service. When they called the telephone rang but not when someone else called. It happened many times. Then I called the men dealing with the ADSL tech. They responded saying that they would look into the matter and noted my telephone number 0522-2381501.
I am totally disappointed with the working style of the BSNL. I am left with only one alternative of approaching the Customers court for the redressal of my grievances and getting the refunds and penalties etc.

Now I am left with only alternative of approaching the Customer Court for the redressal of my grievances and demanding the refunds and losses.
Good Bye

Applied for broadband connection with mtnl. Now 13 days are gone by and still counting !!!! Mtnl is not prepared for competition and will finally sink. Reliance will gobble them up. But nobody is going to even shed a tear – not in least me !!!

i am a victim of MTNL luring offer for cheap broadband.i opted for MTNL broadband connection in THANE region. my bills for last two months areexcessively high(approx.Rs4000/- Pm)inspite of limited use. there is no security and i suspect that my line is tampered and also used by other party. i tried to change my password (given by MTNL)as guided on MTNL web site, it was not permitted and repeated attempts failed. i lodged 2 complaints with MTNL but no response from them. now i have decided to discontinue the triband from MTNL. THerefore before opting for MTNL connection think twice.

Dear Pirates of the www,
Tata Broadband has a package called the Plan-915 under which you get 512Kbps for Rs. 915 + 10.2%…and the whooper is that there is no limit on the bandwidth…i have been using the same for almost 1 and a half years now…i had initially taken the connection throught my LCO(Local Cable Operator)…but the damp squid is that Tata VSNL(as it is known now) has plans to cancel all connections of the Plan-915 as the plan is not available to new subscribers… The question i have is…when Tata VSNL was able to provide 512Kbps Unlimited at Rs. 1020 per month…why does it charge Rs. 1600 for 256Kbps unlimited now??? i thought prices for internet services were on a downtrend…and the best part is they no longer have a 512Kbps unlimited package at all…all they have is download caps…rude customer care….and dwindling customer base…

I started using bsnl broadband a couple of months ago. I started with home 250 plan. This month i upgraded to home 500 plan for the only reason of ‘night unlimited’ offer, ie, they say its unlimited usage from 0200 – 0800 hrs. But i found that they added my net usage at night(2-8 am) to the total volume(GB) used from my account usage at their site. Now i’m not really sure whether i’ll drastically go above my 1 gb limit if i continue to use internet for downloading a lot at night. Somebody please help.

I am a SIFY (Satyam) broadband customer from January 26, 2006. I have four separate broadband connections from SIFY . Ever since I got the connection, there are continuous disruptions in connectivity. Almost everyday i have to call customer care number which is not toll free, they give the same promises adn nothing happens. i just wanted to let people know how unprofessional and useless service SIFY provides. i am finally going to consumer court in pune, as i dont expect sify people to improve.

I was amazed at the ignorance and audacity of BSNL engineers. I was asking the customer service section of BSNL, the server names for POP3 and SMTP to configure for outlook express in my computer. The man at the technical desk gave me some balloney and when I pressed for details and his name he hung the phone. Then I talked to Assistant Engineer who passed on the buck to Junior Enginner. This man asked me to visit the site “dataone.com” which he claimed to have all the answers to my question. To my surprise I found out the site was an american site which has no connection to BSNL. I called him and told him the fact and also told him if he doesn’t know, it’s ok but he could have referred my call to the people who know answer to my query. Then he referred to some technical officer, this time bingo, this officer without hesitation told me the correct web site is “BSNL.com”. Can you beleive if I tell you that this site is a British body building association’s web site ?. I was aghast at the ignorance and adaucity of these people who for BSNL and get paid too for this service. Undaunted I went one step up the ladder and contacted Assistant General Manager( AGM ). I have to tell this man genuinely felt sorry for me and aplogised for the entire episode, though he doesn’t have to–In my opinion only man deserve to work in BSNL, the rest should be packed up or never to attend customers. If BSNL wants to survive they have to privatize and cut the deadwood and the ignorant!!!.

Dear SIr,
BSNL
This has reference to your advertisement I have attracted that you are giving a internet connection with 1GB on monthly rent basis Rs. 250/- Per month.
In response to you ad I have taken a connection with Boardband Scheme depositing 1450/-.
Now BSNL raised bill for Rs. 250/-For Rent and Rs.250/- for Boardband Charges. In total I have to pay Rs.500/-per month against Rs.250/-per month .
Kindly clarify the same otherwise I would may not able to continue your service with this high rare as because there is alternate available in the market.

Broad Band connection is given @ Rs.250/-, or Rs.500/-, or for Rs.900/- per month, as the case may be. I wonder if one joins the scheme of Rs.500/-, will it exceed at any time over and above Rs.900/- for over usage? Or, will the scheme be trated automatically as converted to the schem of 900/- pm. And eventually, if it goes again down to the level of 500/- will it be kept up to that level, say of Rs.500/-?
I wold like to get a clarification either from the authorities, or from any other knowledgiable source.
