Airtel Fair Usage Policy

Airtel Fair Usage policy has become the latest nightmare for the customers of Airtel Broadband.

We have always believed Airtel to be different from other ISPs in the country.

They have always charged a premium.

But anyone who moved to Airtel from a competing provider would tell you that it is totally worth it.

The customer support is so awesome that you are amazed that it works as they promise.

Speeds are as per the plans. Everything feels just right with Airtel Broadband.

But things are apparently changing. Airtel is doing a Comcast with us.

They have decided to implement their own Airtel Fair Use Policy on us.

This means that the company is enforcing data transfer limits on their supposedly unlimited plans.

If you consume too much bandwidth in a month, they reserve the right to slow down your speeds.

And if they did not inform you about it first, the customer care people would apologize and pass on the message.

What can you do? Maybe write some emails to Airtel management, maybe to the TRAI. It’s unlikely to do anything this time around.

Because no one cares about the so called ‘broadband revolution’ that was supposed to happen in India ever since we landed on the ‘information superhighway’.

Airtel Fair Usage Policy

Airtel? You so totally screwed us all today.

Another nail in coffin of Indian Broadband scenario. Soon all ISP’s will follow and as usual we the subscribers can’t do a thing.

If they start throttling then just switch to a competitor. That would be the best challenge than complaining to TRAI. BTW, TRAI recently came down heavily on telcos on their substantial quality of services and products. This should at least give them
    a heads up.
And how is airtel better than bsnl?
I always thought bsnl is the best and cheapest. The unlimited EDGE plan Mobile Office from Airtel on my mobile totally sucks. I get just little better speed (2 times at most) than a dialup.

This rule totally brings the company down to ground, I hope they loose market share like crazy in the next months.

They probably want to save bandwidth because they are going to start using it for Internet TV to make more profit and they figured they can’t juggle all at the same time without screwing over somebody.

I say move over to another ISP.

I think this is a case of ‘few versus all’. There are a few who are wrong and are riding the internet wave at the cost of others by downloading streaming videos and movies. Why should I put up with that when I can get enough download at great speed? What is unlimited download man? What unlimited download for u is exploitation of bandwidth! For me, it is all about getting a good browsing experience enabling me to surf around without bothering anyone.

Radhika, everyone one needs quality browsing experience and for that they subscribe for unlimited broadband to view high quality HD video streaming / multimedia. It may not be always downloading movies. Possibilities are many like a consumer can watch any tv channel from internet. If restrictions are imposed broadband cannot be taken anywhere.. and for you it seems sending emails is good enough speed so dial up should be good for you.

    @suresh

    well said

    @Radhika

do u work for Airtel by any remote possibility?? If I am right – you are a marketing rep..

broadband is an always on i.e, it can be used 24×7 and Unlimited plans is meant for Unlimited download+upload.

Unlimited means Unlimited..Maybe Unlimited means exploitation for you and Airtel.

now who are u decide as to wheter the downloading streaming videos and movies, music, software or for that matter VOIP (that Airtel has blocked)is undesirable.

has the govt of india made youttube or metacafe or rapidshare or megaupload or p2p illegal now?? With bandwidth becoming cheaper and its user base increasing it is Airtel’s duty to upgrade its network.

It is not a small versus rest .. the unlimited user base is growing and since Airtel is finding it extremely difficult to serve all users..shut those unlimited plans or stop the farce of penalising customers for using 10% of data cap.

your are still in the 90s thinking that it is all about some emails and browsing.. learn to use the net first..then come here and strut ur thing .

    @ radhika

You really really really have NO clue whatsoever.

    I mean, honestly.
Just research a little before you say something.Broadband users in the UK and the rest of the world are downloading excess of 200 gb’s per month at speeds of OVER 8mB/sec.
ANd you are trying to defend the isp’s in india who have decided to cap us at 25 gb’s at a BLINDING speed of 512 kbps?
Which, as you can see is 1/16 th of the bandwidth commonly used my the broadband consumers in the UK.

As someone above rightly pointed out,
You would be well served to move to a dial-up plan and free some of your “excessive” bandwidth for needy people like us.

    And please,
    Stop talking NONSENSE.
    few vs all?WHAT THE HELL.

We need to react very strongly. We cant let these greedy companies exploit us. Either they have to take back this policy or they should stop claiming Unlimited Broadband as it is neither one. We need to send start complaining to TARI and DOT and mount pressure on them so these kind of unfair practice are not implemented ever in India.

    @Everyone,

I used to be a Airtel fan but not anymore. Been using their connection for last three years. And was planning to take a new connection too. Guess , i will simply get it from BSNL now. They understand the word “Unlimited” better. Shame on Bharathi anyday.

If u see the enrolment form of new broadband
plans you will notice that Airtel
penalises users even with a 128kbps connection

if 128kbps and 256kbps can saturate ur network..hten
    shut shop u morons..

customer is not brain dead to accept this
    farce.

time I signed up for BSNL.

    Hi all.
After 15 days of investigation following are found regarding airtel becoming netpolice.
1.They blocked VOIP for overseas calls though it is legal. They put the blame on some letter claimed to have been recieved by them from DoT to block IP addresses of popular voip providers.
2.When checked with top oficials of DoT at Delhi, they confirmed that international voip calls are legal as they are made & recieved from a PC in India & they have NOT SENT ANY circular to block that traffic. They even told that if such order was passed it would be posted in their website as well as in Leading news paper. They also told that if we had passed such order it would apply to all ISP’s in India & not specifically to airtel.Strangely no other ISP has blocked voip traffic until date, why are they not following rules or our Big Bully Airtel has taken moral policing of the net??
3.Even the ISPAI has rejected the claim that they have recieved such orders to block international voip trafic\ipadresses of voip providers.
4.It is now clear that airtel is playing games & they will bite the dust as customers will not be happy with their change of attitude. They now have to understand that as per troulbed consumer’s view airtel is proven guity until they come out in the open & prove they are innocent by clarifying their actions both on their Fair usage policy & blocking VOIP traffic.
5.Consumer will not wait nor suffer, they will chose another ISP who can give them better service.

It’s time that airtel consumers make protests in large numbers to make them correct their posture from bullying to serving as after all they get paid by the customers to serve.Right.

I got suspicious when I couldn’t access 4-5 sites, so I used an Anonymizer.. and voila.. I can access your site.

I just received a call from my beloved tataindicon, those buggers never used to even give a call back when i register a complaint.

the rep. told me “sir, you have exceeded the fair usage policy of 105GB”.. WTF?!? 105 gb on a 2mbps line that i pay 5k/month?

i told him to fuck off and kept the phone lol..
so this shit is happenin with everyone.

my friends in netherlands browse at bloody 20mbps for just half the price we pay.

now my speed is down to 400kbps instead of 2048 kbps for the rest of the month.. No early notification, no nothing, they just call u and inform that ur speed is reduced.
