Virgin Mobile India aims to enter GSM market
Virgin Mobile India has announced that they are going to offer GSM services as well in the coming months.
They are already operating as a CDMA service provider using the Tata Teleservices network.
Virgin would be using the GSM network of Tata Indicom when it is launched in the Indian market.
Reliance Communications has already launched their GSM network. They are already a major player in the CDMA market.
Virgin Mobile India CEO M.A. Madhusudan spoke about their plans: “Our agreement with TTSL is technology neutral. At present, our services are restricted to CDMA. Once TTSL unveils its GSM network, we will extend the Virgin services into GSM as well. TTSL is our preferred partner for the GSM brand extension in India.”
Madhusudan added: “Nearly 73% of the Indian mobile market is controlled by GSM operators. An entry into GSM will help us to expand our addressable market and also increase our average revenue per user (ARPU). Currently, our ARPU is nearly 30% higher than the industry average.”
