Samsung files a petition to continue selling dual-sim mobile phones in India
South Korean tech giant Samsung has filed a petition with the Intellectual Property Appellate Board with respect to dual-sim mobile phones.
Madurai-based patent holder Somasundaram Ramkumar currently owns the patents for the technology in these phones that enables them to carry two different sim cards.
He managed to register the patent with the Chennai patent office in 2008. He also then went ahead to register the patent with the Indian customs under the Intellectual Property Rights (imported goods) Enforcement Rules earlier this year.
This resulted in courts applying a ban on imports and sale of such mobile devices in the Indian market.
Market sources claim that the technology claimed by Ramkumar for the patent lacks novelty and hence cannot be patented.
Samsung wants the patent to be revoked so that mobile companies can continue to sell such mobile devices here in India.
They are not alone, Spice Mobiles is also a major player in this segment of the market and they too have filed a similar petition.
