Update on BSNL Broadband Service
BSNL has finally rolled on in the broadband in select cities. However, a closer look reveals that they have not been able to provide connections in all exchanges and it seems the roll out would still take time. BSNL seems to be providing a cheap Chinese modem with the offering. Please note that these are actual user experiences and I have not been able to subscribe to the service to give an actual user account. The launch of the services in my city has been delayed to March. Now Chinese are not exactly conscious about the quality. In the end user agreement, I haven’t come across any kind of buy back agreement or the assurance of after sales service incase the modem goes kaput.
It seems that the user experiences have been positive so far. However, in the initial period is very hard to pin down any concrete issues with it. The main reason is that the bandwidth is not choked, which would be after the threshold of subscribers crosses a certain limit. There has no news in the media so far about the capacity augmentation nor have my insider sources revealed this to any effect.
There have been some users who have shifted from other DSL service providers. However, the compatibility of their previous modems is not deemed to be fit for the internet services of BSNL. I am again wary of investment in BSNL s modem. I do not want to be saddled with a modem, which would not have a second hand market anyway. It is much reasonable to have a buy back arrangement for the same.
It is still too early to comment on the final price or the download limit. This is good enough for anyone who wishes to check mail or chat since during chat very little data is exchanged. So far according my knowledge. If anyone feels that 1 GB is enough for a home user, obviously he is grossly mistaken. This is because there is no indication how the data download is going to be calculated.
Let us hope for something better.

I got my BSNL broadband DataOne a week back. I had great hopes and I discontinued my private ADSL connection. During these seven days, the so called broadband worked for only one day. The first failure was said to be “Down from Bangalore” and the second was ascribed to “teething troubles” which continued for three days. I have been checking speeds regularly. It varies from 120 to 350 kbps but the upload is very low around 120 kbps.
If this is preview of things to come, then God save the BSNL. But I hope these would be only teething troubles really.

First I don’t think there’s democracy in this forum. I have posted negative comments about a number of postings on this forum and it seems I cannot post anymore with the name I have posted before. Not that I spammed or used verbal abuse.
One thing I hate is when people talk without facts. This article above is an example. “BSNL seems to be providing a cheap Chinese modem with the offering”, “Now Chinese are not exactly conscious about the quality”. BSNL ADSL connection comes with UTStar 300R or 300R2 ADSL modems. The manufacturer is UTStarcom Inc. with its headquarters located at 1275 Harbor Bay Parkway, Alameda, CA (California) 94502, USA. Check for yourself: http://www.utstar.com/Company/Office_Locations/ and also check that the modems are in their product list: http://www.utstar.com/Solutions/CPE/ADSL_CPE/. UTStarcomm has a Mumbai office at 1004, Alpha, Hirandani Bushiness Park, Powai, Mumbai - 400 076. It has a Bangalore office too but it is a fully American company. I hope you’re not bothered about the ethnicity of its management board!
I am sure you’ve got a problem with Chinese technology but I don’t know if you’ll be willing to ridicule these American products (which you thought were Chinese). They are not all FCC compliant and are quite low quality compared to 3Com, US Robotics or Cisco equivalents.
Present technical facts and stop shelling out your political viewpoints when the topic of discussion is ADSL. On an aside, your political ideology stinks. When in about ten to twenty years time from now, China becomes the new economic super power against American hegemony, who will have the last laugh??

Anyway, as a matter of fact, the reason why consumer service providers of any kind in India do not bother much about consumer opinion is exactly this: in this forum, we’re supposed to discuss technical problems, setup some kind of a demand from BSNL or whoever the service provider is; and see how far we can get it. On the contrary, it ends up in a politically biased argument and some people asking support questions as if the forum is a part of the service provider. If you love the West then learn something good from them. There’s hardly anything regarding politics in a technical forum.
This is my last post in this useless forum. You can keep swearing at me after this post but I don’t give a toss!

hilarious !!! i liked both your comments here ie. mr bravo n mr coward.. well found it outstanding.. but my reason to look in here was for some reasonable information, which somehow seems secondary here to a war of wits… neways, i want to know if i can use a VOIP router on this boradband connectivity.. which doesnt seem to be working for now… want to know if it is possible to use one too… i dont see a voice chat option on yahoo messenger either.. now my question is, will my query find a soultion on here, or need i look up some other page??? with all due respect and no offences to neone… i have a home user acount with BSNL… 256 kbps…

i have 250 home plan. if i don’t store some data on hd/floppy through net, will it be counted for .4gb downloading limit?

my broad band is slow and PPPoE light never glows. several reminders to 1957 locally at Patna/BSNL broad band but no action yet. Earlier I was told that my software itself is not genuine therefore the problem. After a letter to GM telecom the same software started working but lacks speed.
the PPPoE lit should glow but never glows from the day i t was setup here on my line.Any help welcomed
