TRAI rules that consent is must for value added services
Indian telecom regulatory body TRAI has ruled that mobile service providers would have to seek explicit consent from their subscribers before activating any value-added service on their accounts.
This is good news for mobile users in the country who often found themselves subscribed to paid services they had never subscribed for in the first place.
TRAI has now said that the mobile companies would have to maintain transparency and communicate all the details of the services being offered to the customer.
TRAI said: “Before the activation of VAS, such explicit consent shall be obtained by means of a customer originated call or SMS to a specified number or a request made by the customer in writing or by fax or e-mail.”
The same rules would apply to even free services being offered by the service providers.
