Sify Broadband Insanities

I have been tracking this broadband service from the NASDAQ listed company since 12 months now and they seem to be touching new levels of idiocy with every new update. They call their service broadband and then sell packages, which give speeds that make Dialup looks rocking cool. Then they apply hidden limits, which everyone but a new customer is made aware off! The problems are so painful that one ex-customer has actually sued the company asking for compensation. I myself had to leave my hometown (Panchkula) and move to Gurgaon where I found Airtel Broadband.

The effects of the lawsuits are already visible. Sify Broadband’s new brochures mentions about previously unheard off Service Charges and hidden limits. Even the new package page mentions about their hidden limit in a rather subtle form. Sify Broadband reduces the speeds of connections to meager 16-24kbps after a user downloads 75-100 Megs of data. This can be clarified by calling the customer support. The product page however just mentions:

Usage >= 100 MB/day will be deemed as commercial use

Quite impressive implementation of common sense I would say. If I were to download a distribution of Linux, my attempt would be considered commercial! Considering these packages are not allowed for commercial usage, Sify can literally take the services away from me… The fun part is that these packages come under UNLIMITED RANGE… probably they wanted to say: Unlimited Insanities Range of Broadband (??) Packages.

They end up recommending these packages for:

Best for simple mailing and text chatting.

Which again goes on to showcase what kind of a broadband company we are dealing with here people… Be careful when you fell for such a trap. When it comes to common sensibility, Sify has it very wrong.

    hi this is sachin
    TopIC:Fifteen days of sheer frustation(sify)
hi i have joined this form recently and must have felt disapponted after i have read other users reviews.
I had been cable net user for last 3 years (i wont call that broadband anyway) during my stay in delhi and throughout those 3years i have always complained about service provided to my local isp(he is not a dealer of any reputed ISp but runs his owm LAN)but after i shifted my place to vaishali and subscibed to SIfy broadband i must say that service provided by sify is pathetic.
here is my experiance from 15 days of use.

ISt its hefty instalation charges Rs 2500(does not include LAN card)
my previous local isp charged me only Rs 1000(including LAN)>cable wallah said that this hefty fees is for supperb quality service provided by him and thats how i was tricked .

I agreed for data pack (256 kbps)since i am speed crazy

Ist there was local network problem for initial 7 days every every morning i had to call him to start service since it use to stop the night before(there use to be pathetic ping response)

He use to send his line man everyday and by 2pm services would resume.

Now have a look at quality of services i got.Whenever i was downloading something speed use to shoot up to 32 kbps(constant)and it impressed me(my previous isp provided me 12kbps to 24 kbps during downloads in unlimted 64KBPS pack)but surfing even indian websites like yahoo and rediff would take time. That”s when you get the feeling that sify is fooling you because since it is data pack it wants me to finish up my data usage soon and not bothered about surfing speed(surfing was much faster on previous 64 kbps pack provided by local isp in delhi). After 3 days of usage i found that my session details were being recorded Twice and also my usage was also charged twice .Sify corrected that after 3 days of long calls to there customer service provider.

During those 7 days even though i was shocked at service provided by INDIA’s oldest ISP but i was still not complaing much since i can not change my ISp after paying such hefty Instalation.

My real suffering started after those 7 days

On one stormy day suddenly my broadband stopped i complained to dealer as usually but services have not been resumed even after 7 days .
    Day 1
Initialy he told me that all the HUBS(there are only 3) have been destroyed and he would change them soon(he took only 6 hrs to install them on poles when he started service ,only god knows why he is taking time now just to replace them).

Day 2 next morning ,still no service ,i made a call to him again . as usual he said that service would resume shortly .That day i made numrous calls to him but now he was not taking my calls.

    Day 3TO 5
no service ,same excuses by dealer ,I have realised by now that he will respond to my call only once a day then after he notices my number in his mobile he would not respond

Day 6 I decided to go to his office.Office was closed ,after inquiring from neighbours i was told that the office is closed for last 7 days i checked at his residence only to find it closed also.

Day 7 I called at his residence ,his wife took the call ,told that his husband is not well and no line man is awailable to check services(one is on leave other’s mother is not well and third one has gone to attend some marriage but pledged to resume service as soon as line man arrives.

Day 8 no service suddenly out of bluemoon one linesman arrives to check my service says that there is no current supply hence HUBS are not working but since it is raining today he wont be able ride the pole to rectify it. he also told me that dealer has not payed any of linesman there dues for many months thats why they are not arriving to office.

    Day 9
now i have decide that i would go to meet him personaly to either resume service or return entire ammount i paid to him.

As usual office was closed but lucky to find him playing with his child at his home .He made those same excuses but pledged again to resume service after rain stops.

After that 3 days have passed but no service awialable .I have also complained to customer service at sify but no results .

Now after such traumating experiance i am making sincere request to all members of this forum to kindly guide me to come out of my sufferings.

Sify has been pathetic for me too …. I live in Dwarka (the one in New Delhi),and as of now, there isn’t any other ISP in this area. The network often goes down for 2-3 days at a stretch. I call the dealer, and he either doesn’t pick up the phone,or says that the problem will be rectified within a week. Refuses to give me in written that he is taking X amount of cash from me for package Y (I keep changing my packs according to need at that time).
Am ready to help you guys out in any way possible – do let me know. Iam sure I can get some more people in to support us as soon as something concrete is present.

Sify: The Crappiest ISP in India
If you search through the WWW, you will find a lot of reports on Sify Broadband; With a lot more curses than praises.

I always thought my earlier ISP viz. my local cable guy 5starmetro was bad. I shifted to Sify with the hope of a better internet co…

Sachin,I would suggest you take this up with the Consumer courts .Honestly I donot know the process for this or the time it would take .But I feel that this would atleast get back the amount you invested + compensation for the troubles.
Seriously somebody has to put a check on these practices of Sify(or for that matter any other service) .I donot own any BB connection ..But the thought of owning one causes me to ponder about the service quality of ISP’s..I donot understand how Sify has got away with such bad service..Hasn’t any body yet filed a case against them ?The ‘chalta hai’ & ‘Please adjust’ attitute of these corporations should go away ,before India can get on the Broadband wagon ..Seriously we as a contry are still in the infancy of Broadband …where as countries like Korea ..are way ahead in these matters…The only major improvement in the last few months has been fixing of 256 kbps as BB lower limit by TRAI …. I suggest that TRAI fix some guide lines on the quality of service for all Broadband providers??with parameters like minimum up time, upload & download speeds available ..etc..

    hi this is sachin again
sorry for delay in my feedback .

well on 16 feb I posted my entire experiance about sify and its pathetic cable operater but now i must say these cable operators are equally troubled by sify only thing is we can change our ISP but these poor chaps dont have the infrastructure to change there ISP after hefty investment and sify is pain in their ass too.

Take for my case, well I found out that that the cable fellow had real
problems so he could not provide me service for 15 days.
and he actually compensated that by providing me with a 1GB datapack free of cost for 3 months but after I have used the service for one month i have found that the real culprit is sify itself cos after that intial hiccups the cable operator has not troubled me any more but sify is constantly bothering me

    1. Ist everybody expect their ISp to provide dedicated speeds for atleast data pack users which are already limited ,but I think sify thinks otherwise It is now providing me with just about 50-60kbps speeds even in a 128kbps 1GB limited datapack and download speeds are just 6-8kbps even while using best of download managers.

    2. All p2p software are been blocked for no reason.

3.another Strange problem ,while surfing if I am not doing anything fot 5 min, the speed drops even further to 3-5kbps and 0 download speed
and after a while 0 speed for sufing too. Then to start again you have to LOG out (which displays that my session is already expired )and log in again.
This problem is there for last 2 wks and sify has never attempted to correct this even after repeated complaints.

well I am planning to migrate to unlimited pack from today and only GOd knows what speed I would get.

    Hi All,
I live in Dwarka(New Delhi) where two main Cable Internet operators are operating i.e. Hotwire and Sify. I am thankful to be enligthened about the pathetic service of Sify. I was using Hotwire in a past but had got it disconnected since I had move out of Delhi for a year. I had taken an unlimited pack(64kbps)and service was quite good. With increased number of users the Quality of service deteriorated. However this was tackled by replaceing sime of the Hubs with switches. Service was 24 hr power backed up. Service got suspended only a couple of times in the rainy season with trees falling on the cables. Hubs have been placed in waterproof boxes(just like the cable boosters).

Currently I am using a Reliance phone for Internet since I was using the same with my laptop when I was outside Delhi. The service is pathetic. I find MTNL Dial Up to be much noticeable faster than the Reliance connection. The promised 144kbps is a hoax. Download speeds are lower than those of MTNL Dial Up. The only plus point is the mobility it offers. I have used the Reliance connection even on Highways.

Currently I am looking for a good broadband service in Dwarka. Until MTNL & Airtel do not come up with their services in Dwarka, I’ll have to take up Hotwire once again since the network cable is still plugged into my house. Please let me know of any Broadband services in Dwarka.

You guys are right sify totally sucks.
For all those on Sify and not able to use P2P networks…the reason is that sify recently put up firewalls on all their networks.
Simple solution…call up the customer care and ask them to open up the port no that ur p2p is using. i opened port 6346 and using Limewire, Shareaza, Kazaa, and eMule.

Still thinking of switching to Hotwire but totally confused about the offered speeds. anyone currently on hotwire pls inform of wat speeds are you getting.

SIFY SUCKS, Yes it does , I have had SIFY for th past 3 months and nothing but trouble. I have tried every package with no success.

1st Month: 1 GB Data Transfer: I use 650 MB only and the service pack expires, I complain to customer service and send them copies of their own usuage from the activity box and get no results, I ask for a manager and am told by the representative NO, I call back and ask another rep for a manager and still do not get a manager and she puts me on hold for 45 min. No Luck. So I put a stop payment with my credit card company and sify does have a manager call me now.

2nd Month : I get 128 KBS pack and within 1 week it gives me kicak network down BB101, i am without service for 14 days, I ask for compensation and get it only for service to be down agaun the next day for 7 days, and I do not even get compensated again for the time I did not have service.

3rd Month: I get assurances from the renewal dept and my cable operator that if I renew I would get my compensation for last month and there would be no problems, so I renew. Man did I make a mistake, I do not get compensated and I get Errir BB108 in 2 days and have no service for 6 days. I get compensated and then in 2 weeks it shows my package has expired.

I think it is high time that Sify does not get away with it and needs to fix their customer service level and provide service that we pay for and not lie and deceive the consumers as they are doing.

I am a member of my resident association and have made got all Sify Connections for my Appartments cancelled , so we are all looking for an alternative service provider, any suggestions anyone ? ( Live in New Delhi )

I have the MTNL’s so called unlimited broadband schemes that was supposed to be for 480 rupees a month alongwith a 256 kbps speed. Sounds cool? …..well far from it. It really sucks.Apart from the 10% additional taxes that are incurred on it, i also came to realise much to my dissapointment that the speed was just about passable. Also i could download only 400 mb’s of data a month. So no movies ,music or pictures. The unlimited scheme was just a farce. Also i lose connection very frequently. It seems as if the MTNL guys cant handle this technology.

I am sify broadband user since last 6 months. After this period i can that sify service is real pathetic. There local cable service is much poorer. in these last six months most of the time there was no connection at all from the local cable service. For last 6 days my broadband connection is down and there is no action has been taken till today(24Nov05). I have made this complaint to sify customer care and local cable operators and still nothing has been done.

I am a sify user 4 past 1 month.I have realised that sify just boasts abt. it,s services and does nothing. U can’t run p2p on it.U have 2 have their anti-virus.It doesnot recogmise the avast antivirus which is better by leaps and bounds from their trend micro.Their service is very attrocius except for the time of installation and collecting money. I think that my dial-up connection far much better slow though.Once i was not able 2 connect then the lineman came and uninstalled my anti-virus and i had 2 format my system. Is this the service we are paying for?

    Hi all,
I am using MTNL Triband broadband from one month and its like heaven.
I get a minimum download speed of 256Kbps (32KBps)which my service provider claims to be. Also i have no trouble of any kind. Service is really good. Haven’t tried Sify or Hotwire yet. My friend use TATA broadband and is satisfied with it.
    Mail me for any clarification.

For everyone who stays in Dwarka: I’ve tried Sify, Hotwire, Kanon [a local thing]; and none of them seems to know even what service they are providing. Essentially, all of them are crap.

If u want what u can actually call broadband, go for MTNL or AirTel (if your society has the option). I’ve noticed that these providers are really nice, and make broadband a better experience altogether.

    Dear Readers,

HORRORS OF SIFY VIZAG – A NEW LOW IN CUSTOMER CARE.

Beware of Sify in Vizag. Here the service is run by a franchisee ‘Vaishno Communications’. As is the habit of the obnoxious laid-back attitude of the person who work here in almost all the MNC brands, the same applies to Sify’s functioning here.

After getting sick & tired of making many complaints to their call centre- which I am sure not recorded or regsitered at all in the first place- I am constrained to use this blog to vent my anger.

I am a hapless customer of Sify Broabdband. When I first applied for the connection, they promptly landed up near my doorstep to collect the money and then they dissappeared for a good 14 days despite my phone calls. Then they gave the connection and the very next day, the internet connection was gone.

Just imagine when I got the internet back? After 27 days. Can you beat that? I mean are we living in some communist country? They are truly unashamed. They were indifferent to my outcry.

Then, eventually they restored the connection and sent the monthly bill! and they gave me charity of 7 days paymnet waiver! I thought things would get normal. But I was wrong. Every Second Day the connection goes off.

The longest period of Sify’s continous connectivity was 4 days. That’s it. The new trend is that when the connection is up and running, a guy from Sify would ring the bell and ask if the internet connection was okay. Once he leaves after 1 hour or so, the damn connection is off again.

I can bet on this. Sify SUCKS big time. I don’t know if the guys who are supposed to monitor these employees of the Franchisee are sleeping or just ignoring customers like us.

Come festival time and the Sify Franchisee guys behave that it is their birth right NOT to attend to your complaint. Wait until the festival season is through!

To top all this, when the payment date arrives, indicated by their client, when I call them to come and collect the payment, they don’t and the connection gets expired and gets restored only after a day.

If Vizag has to atleast match Pune, Coimbatore, Surat (Forget cities viz. Hyderabad etc. with such sick mentality – NO CHANCE), atleast, all of us vizagites should ‘teach’ these guys here a lesson or two and be PERSISTENT in getting things done.

IF YOU ARE SERIOUS BUSINESSMAN OR A PERSON WHO NEED TO HAVE GOOD AND ALWAYS ON CONNECTIVITY, PLEASE DO NOT APPLY FOR SIFY. YOU WILL LOSE YOUR COOL PRETTY SOON. YOU BETTER OPT FOR DATAONE FROM BSNL OR EVEN IQARA BROADBAND – IQARA GUYS ARE MUCH MUCH BETTER COMPARED TO SIFY.

A VERY VERY ANOOYED CUSTOMER. IF ANY MEMBER OF SIFY MANAGEMENT IS READING THIS, MY SIFY ID IS globalex123. AS I HAVE MADE ENOUGH COMPLAINTS ALREADY OVER PHONE, I HAVE NO PATIENCE LEFT. THIS IS PERHAPS THE ONLY WAY TO ATLEAST SAVE OTHER GUYS FROM THE HORRORS OF YOUR SERVICE.

Come-on Guys. Stop bitching about Sify. I think that they provide a wonderful service. When you call their customer care the executives are rather nice. They always escalate my complaint to a higher level.

So the delayed response is not because of bad service in sify. It is only because the call is never escalated high enough to reach someone with brains and conscience. And going by their support chaps who drop in when you get lucky, and going by their service, it might take a long time before the call is escalated to that level.

Oh yes, and their Internet does not work. But can you blame them ? Not really. After all they are just craving for getting their license cancelled and public flogging on their backside (or even in front of the backside).

so I believe we should do something like that. One only wishes that they curb their ad budget and invest in real technology. At present they seem to be using a human being (if they may be called so) who sits at the end of your phone line, reads each byte you send to it and personally goes and types that byte on a console attached to their network.

I am just so tempted to use profanity, so I guess having pointed out what sify really stands for, I might as well sign off…

And by the way, incase you are wondering…. if I was using Sify to post this message, I dont think it would have ever landed up here.

Sent over sify, the max i’d be able to post is probably “SIFY SUCKS” – that too if I logged in at 3:30 AM….

    Sir,
I had got installed MTNL broadband connection on 19th Dec. at 256 KBPS speed the pack was of Rs.199/- on my telephone no.26169721 with 400 MB free data download. On the day of installation it showed 146 MB. I was surprised that how it happened? I went to all the MTNL higher officers but in vain. I asked them that how it happend kindly check it but no one turned up. They charged me 702MB. I got the broadband disconnected on 28th Dec.but to my surprise it was disconnected on 11th Jan 2007. They harassed me a lot I want the reimbursement of 146 MB as to how it came. Apart from that I want the reimbursement of rent of 11 days for which I was charged. I am having all the documents under receipt with me. I have already given a complaint to TRAI they had also written letter to MTNL but MTNL has not responded. So it is my personal request to kindly look into the matter and solve my prolem and try to provide the reimbursement for which MTNL is held responsible. Chander Bhushan.
