AT&T considering buying a stake in BSNL
Economic Times is reporting that US based telecom giant AT&T is considering acquiring a stake in BSNL to enter the Indian market.
India remains one of the fastest growing telecom markets in the world and AT&T wants to become a bigger player here.
It is however not clear if the Indian Government is interested in selling a stake in the highly profitable BSNL.
An inside source has been quoted as saying: “The government is unlikely to sell a majority stake in BSNL, which is already undergoing restructuring. If at all there is a sale to a foreign operator, it will not be more than 26%, considering the sensitivity of the sector”.
BSNL is currently fully owned by the Indian government. There have been talks about a possible IPO but no definite plans have been revealed.
