December 31 2009: Latest date for Mobile Number Portability launch in India

Mobile users in India have waited for a long time for the number portability system to arrive in the market.

It was supposed to be launched long time ago but massive delays have ensured that we are still waiting for it to arrive.

Industry experts believe that the mobile service providers in the country have been able to avoid this new challenge till now but things are going to change in the near future.

If we are to believe the government, Mobile Number Portability would be introduced in India this December 31.

The process would begin with launch in four metro cities initially. Rest of the country is now likely to get this facility by March next year. It remains to be seen however, if this is the final launch date.

We have become accustomed to the delays and most people have given up hopes of changing their service provider while retaining the same mobile number.
