Mobile phone companies asked to publish directory
This is interesting development. Mobile phone companies have been asked to publish directories. Would it actually happen? Walla! Let us hear the criticism of TRAI order in the coming few days. They would raise noise about Customer privacy. For years on an end, Telephone directories were the only source for the subscribers; true that telemarketers did bother to no extent; but then one has the option to stay out of the proposed directory.
Let us analyze the order. This would mean that these companies would have to spend out extra cash to keep their house in order and share the customer details. High spending customers would avoid; despite the fact that all of them cozy under the umbrella of COAI, they would be glad to poach from the other operators. As of now, it is blind marketing. I might get a call from Hutch to migrate to their plans; being on CDMA I would not want to invest all over again. Hence, a database of GSM subscribers makes much more sense; they could focus on the select group and hence save on money.
A more ’sinister’ affect would be that these companies would be forced to account for the numbers. Simply because they have avoided doing so, millions of subscribers would just vanish in thin air. What would happen to their valuation? Alternatively, perhaps the way that these companies fool others in believing?
Expect litigation in TDSAT or their lawyers getting hefty paychecks. True, TRAI has kept these lawyers very happy; though failed miserably as a regulator to safeguard end consumers interests.
Somehow my biases get revealed in this, isn’t it?

Hi!
I think this is a mandatory requirement for all the customer who are using mobile. Sometimes, people abuse them via sms or phone. You don’t get any clear idea about the person until u r very sure about that.
So, i think this is really a mandatory and safety features that required by the customer.

After mining the web, I have been only able to figure out that this number is of Airtel Tamil Nadu and the same format viz. 98942 is there for Pondichery, Rameswaram and Coimbatore. I have not been able to find out who the subscriber of the last five digits viz. 93280 is .
I called the number but the person is not willing to reveal his identity.
The only way this kind of nuisance may be avoided is if the phone companies publish directories.
For years , BSNL has had landline phone directories and yellow pages were how we found out addresses of people prior to the internet age. The there were no privacy or telemarketing issues.
So why not now?
The government needs to urgently act to force the phone companies to publish mobile phone directories. This may be the logical continuation to the compulsory registration of prepaid cell numbers that is in effect now.

recently i lost touch with an army frnd of mine and tht was bcoz she had shifted and so neither her ph no wrked and i juz had the no so no optionb for adress etc therefore until i went to muh boarding school for a tournamnt in tht place after havin left tht skool did i find out her mobile no so we neva lose touch i missed her bday bcoz of this and wsa seriously wrried at times. If a Per son is so worried abt their privacy though i m blunt but let em tell those couch patotoes tht their r programs not very expensive coming by which u can block nos too so plz exercise ur body and not act like a sissy and cause inconvenience for others and though i agree our police in not the very best but when it comes to ur address and stuff they do take enough action to ward off nasty fellows and small time professionals the real personal information danger is for the VIPs andso if u r a so called VIKP dear mister VIP wake up with life bcoz companies provide with methods to remain unknown so wher r the so called negative effectds but there still r positive effects tht have no deniance so guyz we indians better change our repo and start being more efficient and not bloody lazy fools and stop from our laziness many ppl frm benefitting.

there are certain aspects of every citizen that is public. i am of the opinion that a telephone is a very public thing and there is no secracy about it.it is already a proven fact that the telephone directories are being used effectively for years now, the caller id’s have been effected in the last few years and are accepted as a useful tool to eradicate the nusiance of unsolicited calls.mobile directory is a must, with a mandatory address of the user.

Also there should be an enquiry system, on net as well as on telephone/mobile, where one can enquire about the owner of a mobile number, just as we have telephone directory enquiry in place. The concerned department shuld look into this matter.

After reading this ad i think this should be made mandatory for all the service providers of the mobile industry to publish the Directory of Mobile users. Because like the land line service telephone service providers are giving the facility. One can say the privacy is there but we should look out for the users of this service. As far as i am concerned the users those who are searching for their friends are more than who are there to disturb other persons the ratio may be around 80:20 .As I have got the mobile number of my frd but his mobile is not working rite now but i wanna meet him so i am looking for his address but sorry to say it is not possible in India now a days but hope so in the coming days we are able to understand & realise the necessity for the same.

I think no further words are required after reading above; we look for larger spectrum of benefits. Hence, it needs to be made compulsory for all the service providers, if they want to continue in the mobile phone services.
There are no constructive reasons of keeping this industry differently from BSNL.

Some time I can’t understand what the problem of the mobile company to publish their telephone directory and show when who use their network.Today everything is on internet then being a communication organiser why they don’t attained this.It can bring a clearity to all mobile user and can be safe from any unauthorised work.The subscribers will be benificted, if the companies publish their directory and show the informetion on using their network.

Even i agree with the idea of introducing directories. Atleast we would be on safe side. This way no unknown person can trouble us by makin abusive cal and msg’s. Last year because of a wrong nos i had to change my nos. Also i have lost one of my precious friend as his nos is changed and so as mine’s so we r not able to contact each other. So it’s a firm request that pls get the directories in market as soon as possible.

Some days back I lost my expensive mobile containing lots of data. The person who got it made some personal calls too. Its getting difficult for me to trace the person whom he has called. A mobile phone directory in place would have certainly helped me. I hope its out soon.

some days back i got really stupid and vulgur sms frm the hutch number i tried to trace d number but i was nt able to bcoz fr dis without knowing i can’t launch a police complaint..so i think an online directory shud be there…

there is always a conflict between comfort and abuse. the similar one like nuclear technology. but is there is a stop to anything. it would be better to publish the telephone numbers but strengthen the laws for it’s misuse and abuse of telecom.

It is very important to get the address details of the particular number. There is nothing like privacy in that. It should be taken care that the customers are able to know who is calling them and from where? Yes, it is possible to know the state but that is not enough. The number sharik ariff is getting, I have searched and it is from Kolkatta and the network provider is BSNL.
