Is Airtel Broadband really Broadband as per TRAI?

TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) released a documentation quite sometime ago which laid out the Recommendations on Accelerating Growth of Internet and Broadband Penetration. The document clearly defined broadband as:

Broadband is an “An always-on data connection that is able to support various interactive services, and has the capability of a minimum download speed of 256 Kbps”.

Now, we already are aware that Sify openly make a mockery of this theory by selling packages of speeds 48kbps under the brand name of Sify Broadband. They claim that they sell sub-256kbps packages under the label of Hi-Speed, which is another slap in the face of the authorities.

Now, let us take Airtel Broadband. Some of the most popular packages being sold by this company come with speeds of 64kbps and 128kbps. We are still not sure how can they provide these services under the brand of Airtel Broadband. When would we see a decent broadband? I guess the Mbps speed thingy is still way too far off.

Discuss on: Sify Broadband, Tata Indicom, Airtel Broadband, Reliance Broadband, MTNL - BSNL Broadband, Dial Up, Others

The TRAI directive on Broadband has been kicked around by most of the so called broadband opeartors offering speeds of 48-64 kbps under innovative names. The slap in the face of such directive would be given time and again until we rise up as consumers and take these operators by their throat. If that is asking for too much, then we shouldn’t be complaining in the first place.Could we as consumers expect the respected people writing their daily views here to take up this issue with the regulator so as to create a mass awareness among the ignorant users of broadband.

I think this could be the fisrt step to take for the operators to deliver what they promise.

That’s the typical INDIAN GOVERNMENT!! ROfl,here they release rules and regulations to make people think that they’re doing something, and RIGHT under their nose, corrupt ISP like BSNL, Sify (the leader in all of this), MTNL break all the rules, with no problems.

Cheers for Airtel for providing a pathetic speed of 128 at unlimited, the true unlimited. Other the rest, suck so bad, and is so irritating when they post the ‘unlimited broadband’ thing, i truly will get banned here if post that godamn word.
India is corrupt. that’s all. Nobody follows rules, big company’s think Indians don’t have any knowledge so they’ll buy anything which is sort of true, and that’s what helping ISP like Sify do great.
oh well, what can we do ? nothing!

    Hello all,

Before you all shout from the rooftops, please dig this.

    1) kbps means kilo bits per second and not kilo bytes per second. So when you take a 256Kbps connections, your bandwidth is resticted to a maximum of 32 kilobytes per second.

    2) Most of the “broadband” providers in india use ADSL technology. In ADSL, the upload speed is restricted to a minimum limit of 50% of the download speed. In case of BSNL, it is around 30% of the download speed.

I had taken a 256kbps connection of unlimited usage from airtel but they had given me 128kbps connection of unlimited usage and charges for 256kbps. This shows that they cheats customers. I had taken the connection on 25feb2006 but they had not given me the adjustment of above.

I too face the same problem. What ever committment given by Airtel is not correct and they are cheating the customer.
