MTNL-The uglier face of Indian Telecom

Indian media surely knows how to report without application of mind. MTNL plans no rental for broadband services. It is good as long as people do not read the fine print. For every MB downloaded, a person would be charged Rs.2. This is usurious. Frankly, one would not have any idea as to how much the downloaded data resides on your disk; none of the telecom companies has bothered to clarify the same.

Meanwhile this telecom circus is frankly getting more mundane. I really wish at times that instead of resorting to cheap gimmicks like these, MTNL could improve on their services. For every GB of data download, one would pay through his/ her nose. Affordable Broadband? Mr. Maran, you can fool some people some times (this Blog for example) and fool all others all the times (the media is a perfect example).

While Rs 2/MB is, indeed, usurious, the title for the most expensive net access should go to the Huthc GPRS service that costs approx. Rs 51/MB.

I dont quite agree to this. MTNL offeres diffrent plans for diffrent needs and the one u r talkin abt is the barebones plan, The very fact that they billing on the basis of data shows the quality of service. (More data u get, the more u pay). That means if their net slows down they wont get money, unlike my local isp whose billing was time based but the speed was just above a dialup. its was so pathetic that i cant think of a decent expression to describe it. No thoughput only bills. I am using 700MB@Rs.399 of MTNL and its service is superb. it often crosses the 256kb/s mark (max 49KBPS)which is quite surprising!
