Engineers working to restore Pakistan undersea cable fault
The Internet and telephone services in Pakistan have been crippled ever since a fault occurred in the undersea cable. The engineers have started working on the restoration process by visiting the site located 11 kms from the shore near Karachi. However, the latest news in claimed that they are still unable to find the fault location.
Poor weather has also meant that the repairing process has been slower than usual. The affected cable is the country’s only Internet link and has caused huge disruption. They are coping through the satellite link for the time being. Junaid Khan, president of Pakistan Telecommunication has claimed that the fault was probably internal, as the cable itself did not seem to be damaged.
They have also promised that once this problem is fixed, they would take the appropriate measures to prevent similar problems in the future. They would be adding two new links in the future to share the load of the networks in Pakistan. Some traders in the financial sector said last week that demand and turnover had dipped as much as 60%. The country has more than 10 million net users and banks are some of the worst sectors to be affected by this downtime.
