Broadcom files a lawsuit against Qualcomm

Broadcom Corporation is a tech company dealing in manufacturing of broadband semiconductors. And they have just filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm Incorporation, another networking giant in the industry. The charges are that the Qualcomm are violating domestic antitrust laws. The claim is aiming at the Qualcomm’s licensing and other practices related to cellular technology and products.

Broadcom has been challenging Qualcomm since quite sometime and the lawsuit is just the latest of the attempts. Qualcomm licenses CDMA technology to the mobile carriers, which is a widely used cell phone technology. The claim against Qualcomm is that their monopoly in the CDMA market has resulted in higher cost prices for the end customer.

They are basically targeting the upcoming 3-G technology and want to prevent similar monopoly in that area to benefit the end customer of the 3-G mobile phones. They say that Qualcomm’s licensing deals violate its agreement to provide fair licensing terms that are part of telecommunications industry standards.

Broadcom also claims that the Qualcomm charges discriminatory royalties and is involved in anticompetitive practices in supplying cell phone technology and chipsets. Qualcomm has yet not commented on this lawsuit against them by the Broadcom Corporation, which has two more lawsuits to their name against the networking giant.
