Internet via Cable to touch speeds of 100mbps
Not very soon though. A Finnish company has claimed that the way technology on cable is improving; we should have Broadband Internet access via TV cables at speeds reaching 100 megabits per second as early as next year. These speeds are around 50 times faster than prevailing offerings available in the market. The company also claimed that the fiber network based networks would improve too but would not be as affordable as Internet on cable.
Jukka Rinnevaara, chief executive of Finnish broadband equipment maker Teleste was speaking to Reuters when he said: “This is a cost-efficient technology, as we use the cable TV networks which are already in place.†The company competes with global players like Scientific Atlanta and Cisco Systems. Teleste is also planning to come out with its Ethernet-to-the-home product, which will give consumers access to speeds of up to 100mbps sometime next year.
The company is currently running a field trial with service provider Essent in the Netherlands and is yet to reach the promised levels of performance. Pekka Rissanen, a Teleste executive added to the comments made by Jukka: “Based on our research, 30 megabits per second is the absolute minimum in future homes. Just one TV program would take 10 to 20 megabits per second of this alone. So, very fast we would reach a need for 30 megabits, and also for 50 megabits per second.”
The figures sound amazing for now. However, the way technology is improving… more would be less in the future.
