Regulators make it easy for Phone Companies

U.S. telecommunications regulators have decided to scrap a rule, which made it tough for the phone companies to compete with cable network providers to give Internet related services to the end consumers. The Federal Communications Commission voted today and they would now allow Verizon Communications Inc. and other companies bar competing Internet service providers from leasing the phone companies’ networks.

FCC Chairman Kevin Martin spoke to the press about this decision: “The order is a momentous one. It ends the inequities between the phone and cable providers.” The decision was taken with the vote count showing 4-0 in favor of scrapping the rule.

Cable Internet providers dominate the local market in the United States in the $15.6 billion worth high-speed Internet access market. They have a market share of 56 percent in the customer base of around 37.9 million customers at the end of 2004. Phone companies on their part have just 13.8 million customers of the entire lot.

Cable providers also were benefited from a recent decision from the U.S. Supreme Court, which enabled them to exclude Internet service providers or charge them higher prices in the month of June.
