Nokia sells their one-Billionth Mobile Phone

The world’s largest seller of mobile phones, Nokia has announced that they have achieved a significant milestone by selling what is their one-billionth portable (mobile) phone. The company began manufacturing such devices way back in the 1980s and are the current market leaders in this segment crowded with players from all over the world.

Kai Oeistaemoe, senior vice president of Nokia’s Mobile Phones division said in a statement: “Earlier this summer, Nokia sold our one billionth mobile phone, a Nokia 1100 sold in Nigeria. It will be new growth markets like Nigeria that will fuel the growth towards three billion subscribers by 2010.”

Market sources claim that the world currently has as many as 2 Billion mobile users. Nokia faces fierce competition from competitors like Motorola, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson as all these players are working hard on overcoming the market leader.

Nokia’s first mobile phone was a 15-kilo (33-pound) car phone called Mobira Senator, which arrived, in the market in 1982. The latest mobile phone from the company is that Nokia 2652, which is expected to be available next month. They are currently developing as many as 400 different models for their various markets in the GSM and CDMA technologies.
