After DVD for China, its CDMA chip for Korea

It looks like the monopolistic practices of the multinational corporations are going to face competition from nations developing their own standards to enable them avoid paying royalty fees for manufacturing hardware gadgets. The war between Toshiba and Sony over the next generation DVD storage format led to China deciding to develop their own EVD format to compete with Blu-Ray and HD DVD formats.

Now, Korea is aiming to get out the long shadow of Qualcomm, which retains the source technologies of code division multiple access. They have developed their own modem chips with the help of Eonex. The company said that its modem chips for CDMA2000 1X were adopted by a local handset maker.

Eonex president Chun Sung-hwan said in a statement: “This marks a turning point to challenge the 15-year dominance of Qualcomm in the CDMA modem chip market. Plus, Korea will be able to save a big chunk of money required to snap up CDMA modem chips”. CDMA happens to be one of the two popular standards for mobile communications with the other being GSM.

Qualcomm initially developed the CDMA technology and deployed it commercially in every stage of its generations from analogue to third generation (3G).
