Vodafone acquires 10 per cent stake in Bharti Tele-Ventures

In an interesting move, the Britain-based Vodafone Group PLC has bought a near 10% stake in the Bharti Tele-Ventures of India. Bharti are the largest mobile operator in the growing Indian mobile market and the deal is worth around USD 1.5 billion. Vodafone itself is the Europe’s largest cell phone company. The 10% share includes 4.4 per cent stake in Bharti Enterprises in addition to the 5.65 per cent stake of private equity firm Warburg Pincus L.L.C in Bharti Tele-Ventures.

Chairperson and group managing director Bharti Enterprises Sunil Mittal informed the media that the deal took place with Vodafone paying around 351 rupees per share for the 10 per cent stake. However, Bharti Enterprises continues to hold a controlling 45.9 per cent stake in Bharti Tele-Ventures. They have no further plans to sell more stake in the company for now.

Mittal added to his comments: “We are delighted to have Vodafone as our additional partner to further develop the Indian telecom market.” Bharti expects this deal to help them further participate in the Indian telecommunications market, which happens to be one of the fastest markets in the world.

This is not the first venture for Vodafone in the Indian market. They had left the market after pulling out of an investment in a regional Indian player in 2003. Bharti is much strongly placed and it would help them to establish a presence here in the Indian market.

Please advise me how vodaphone will be marketing its products and how does it plan to open its centers or outlets for retails. Will these retail be on franchise basis or rental/buying basis?
