China taking help from US Verso Technologies to block VoIP
China has taken technical help from a US based company named US Verso Technologies to block applications used for VoIP communications in the country. Chinese government has levied many restrictions on the users of internet in the country and VoIP is also banned for the users. However, many applications like Skype and others enabled the web users in China to make online voice conversations. That might not happen any longer.
US Verso Technologies has sold a trial version of their VoIP blocking application to major telecoms firms in China for this specific purpose. This would enable these companies to block computer-to-telephone call services. Verso’s chief executive Monty Bannerman said in a statement: “Verso does have an executed trial agreement with a tier-one carrier in China. However, at the request of the customer, we will maintain their anonymity until the trial is completed.”
The aim behind blocking this service is to stop the losses occurring at the various governments telecom companies due to heavy usage of these free services by the web users in the country. If the trial process is successful, China Telecom hopes to install it nationwide over the next two years. Skype is a very popular software for VoIP on the internet with around 64 million users globally and is adding around 170,000 registered users per day.
