China would soon require all mobile owners to register
The Indian government has already implemented a policy making it compulsory for all mobile owners to register their details with their service providers. Now, china is aiming for a similar ruling in their country. the Chinese state media has reported that the country would soon require all mobile phone users to register with telecom providers or face a cutoff in service.
This new rule is aimed to stop telephone fraud and illegal text-messaging practices, which helps the illegal trading of stolen mobile phones and counterfeiting. They also expect to control “improper political commentary†through this new ruling which is just the latest of the government’s steps to control the freedom of speech of their citizens.
Most of the mobile users in the country are registered with major telecommunications companies such as China Mobile and China Unicom. However, there are a large number of mobile phone owners who use prepaid phone cards and buy the SIM without any registration with the service provider. More than half of all the mobile users in the country are using prepaid cards and the government’s ruling is mostly targeting this user base.
This new law would come into effect from the beginning of next year and the mobile phone users would have to comply within six months or lose their phone services.
