Texas to soon get Broadband over power lines
The state of Texas in the United States would soon get broadband connectivity access over power lines. With this development, they would join a small group of localities, which are providing facility to their residents. The aim of the Current Communications Group is to increase the competition in the market and give more options to the consumers who currently have to choose between telephone and cable companies.
The have gone under a 10 year long deal with the TXU Electric Delivery. The deal is worth around $150 million and Current Communications Group would be designing, building, and operating a power line network for TXU. They would be making their services available to around 2 million customers in the region.
Interested customers can plug a tiny modem, based on the HomePlug power line standard, into an electrical outlet and connect a cable from their computer for Internet access. The company claims that their services are capable of two-way speeds 25 times faster than other high-speed services. The technology also supports Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and digital quality video streaming.
The efforts to deliver broadband over power lines have been interestingly encouraged by the Federal Communications Commission.
