Lenovo collaborates with Cingular for 3G technology
China based Lenovo which recently took over the Personal Computer division of the tech giants IBM have announced collaboration with Cingular Wireless mobile service providers in the United States. Lenovo are now the manufacturers of the ThinkPad laptops and they are now planning to embed high-speed Internet access technology from Cingular Wireless into its laptops.
These laptops would be arriving in the retail market by March this year and these ThinkPad laptops would be preconfigured to access Cingular’s newly built third-generation technology called BroadbandConnect. They are making use of two new technologies for wireless internet connectivity, UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access).
Cingular’s BroadbandConnect made its debut in the US market last month and promises speeds between 400 kilobits per second and 700kbps. The collaboration between these two companies mean that Cingular customers using these new ThinkPads from Lenovo won’t require to purchase new networking hardware to access this advance broadband service from Cingular Wireless.
Cingular has already launched this new service in around 52 communities in the United States and expect to make it available throughout the country by the end of the year. Users who are not located at locations providing the BroadbandConnect service would still be able to use the company’s EDGE service, which provides download speeds of 70kbps to 135kbps. Cingular provides EDGE based connectivity in more than 13,000 cities across the U.S.
