No late night free calls for Bangladesh mobile users

This news piece is pretty interesting. The Bangladesh government has instructed the mobile service operators in the country to stop offering free calls during the late nights. They claim that such freedom to talk with others after midnights encourages vulgarly, affect studies of students and promote chit chatting amongst the teens in the country.

Bangladesh is a deeply conservative country where dating is discouraged by the parents for their kids. Reportedly, it was the parents of the teenagers who complained to the telecom authorities to bring about such a restriction. A Bangladesh telecom official said in a statement: “The commission has taken the decision following a flurry of complaints by parents against such free late-night facilities.”

However, the teens in the country are not very happy about this move. They claim that the parents should act as a moral police rather than taking the help from the government to restrict their freedom to communicate. The move comes as a shock to many considering the competition between the mobile firms tends to benefit the end customer in the end.

Bangladesh has five major mobile service providers out of whom two – GrameenPhone and CityCell – offer the free calls between midnight and 6 a.m. Both of these companies are surprised to receive this notification from the Bangladesh government.

Interestingly, Indian Broadband Companies are also indulging in similar practices of offering free or cheap broadband access during the nighttime. Thank god, we do not have to face similar restrictions.
