Sucky Airtel Broadband
Airtel Broadband February 1st, 2006
I have been on Airtel Broadband ever since I moved to Gurgaon in December 2004. It has been a good experience on Airtel. Especially when I compare it to Sify Broadband. However, the last month has been a revelation.
The company announced double speeds at night scheme. However, when I check it at my place, I find it hard to believe if that actually is happening at my place. The best I get during the daytime is around 17 KBps when I should be getting around 32 KBps. At night, the speed improves to around 25 KBps when I should technically be getting 64 KBps.
A little loss in delivery of the speed is acceptable to me. But less than half of the speeds, I should be getting? Not good. Maybe I should start Blogging on my ongoing experiences with Airtel Broadband as I did it with Sify. Or maybe I should just harass the customer care people who have the usual suggestions… Scan for viruses/worms, clean cache, restart, reinstall. What crap?
I do not need their crappy online bandwidth tester when I can see what speeds I am getting on my download manager. And I do not need to listen to stupid comments that maybe my PC is infected with a worm, which is eating all my bandwidth. I am a smart enough guy to know that speeds suck from their side and they are doing nothing about it.
Maybe instead of spending money on keeping Shah Rukh Khan advertising for them, they can invest more in keeping their existing customers happy. Instead, I get spam calls on my Airtel telephone in the middle of the night telling me about their new caller tunes feature which would enable me to let the people calling me listen to the latest Emraan Hashmi starrer movie’s song.

Dear Sushubh, Pls note that all broadband connections are provided on a best effort basis. Also broadband refers to your access connection speed to the ISP. So the link between you to the ISP is 256kbps. Say u download a software from Winzip , your expected throughput is = minimum bandwidth on the entire path from Winzip server to your desktop. So if i were to send you a file thru’ yahoo transfer and my connection is of 128kbps, your throughput will never exceed 128kbps. And if i have a download ftp server hosted on this line, and 10 users are access it, throughput wouldn’t exceed 12 kbps per user. When ISP ask u to do a speedtest, they ask you to check it with a locally hosted server, which enables them to check the speed with which you connect to them. That is how things work globally. Hope u get the point.
Enjoy the speeds that u get, for not everyone gets to avail it.
you know i moved to gurgaon to get a decent connection. it has worked fine for me for the last 12 months. it’s not that i am being unjustified here. i accept partial loss of speed. but 60% less speed than what i should be getting? no sir. it does not work like that.
and the problem is not on my side. the airtel guy comes and claims that i am on a lower speed package. i had to show the SOB a paid copy of the bill to prove that i have got the package i am claiming i have.
as for staying happy with what i have got? those days are gone. i am not giving these guys any room for complacency. airtel broadband are in for a sushubh effect.

But your problems with speed is not atall a problem before TATA BROADBAND Service.
TataBroadband is shit.Most of the time I wont be having connection.every 1 or two days
I loose connection,I need to call those customer care, who knows silver bullet solution,
RESTART THE COMPUTER AND ROUTER.If you say I already did it before calling you, they ask
you to do it again now, and their 56600121 is not a toll free number, your phone bills
will be more than your broadband bills.Atleast once my phone call went for 60 rupees.
Tata customer service people even put down the phone in the middle of conversation,
great respect for customer(that too I never ever used a single bad word).
This happened for more than 5 months.
The worst part, for a period of 30+ days(minimum 30 days) I didnt had net connection.
(That was from dec 21st 2005 to Jan 17th 2006 except for one day Dec 27th).
So for a period of one month I dont have internet, and they are asking me to pay for that
period.And the only reason I didnt switched so far is I paid a non refundable amount for getting the
connection.now I am even ready to loose that and go for someone else
I am planing to start a blog on nightmares with Tata Broadband connection.

hey sushubh….am in delhi well i had a 128Kbps n then i upgraded it to a 256Kbps connection 1st month i got my promised speeds then 1 day 1 of my friends called customer care and sed tht am great speeds n tht he isnt getting anything compared to my speeds so from there on then my night mare began those SOBs somehow managed to reduce me back to my 12Kbps speeeds n when I call customer care all they say tht sir we only commit to bandwidth and tht it stays between 128-256Kbps i mean tht s just BULLSHIT….wat can i do bout it?? its pissin off….god hope these bast**** just go bankrupt or something.
Simply telling airtel is a worst ever service in india….. The logo should be changed–

hey people i have a airtel broadband 256 KBps night unlimited plan and i am getting 53kb/sec average for download a file. and i am only my night free hours(9.00 pm- 8.00 am) easily download 1800 MB. and till my best download in free hours is 1400 MB.this file is redhat linux 9 iso.
and i think airtel is to good for me.
Airtel M.P. has got a lot of fools in its customer care. They even have no information about what tariffs are available.
They disconnects phone if they have no answer..
They were not able to activate my MMS since 15 Aug 2005!!
And a lot more to prove that Airtel is the worst service. Once you get into it you will repent you should not have opted for it..
NEVER GO FOR AN AIRTEL CONNECTION……. ITS THE WORST….
I am in Delhi and a broadband user for last 2 years. I have used Sify, Tata Indicom and now Airtel. Let me tell you all the three suck for different reasons. I am using Sify for all 2 years. Used Tata Indi for 3 months last year and now using Airtel BB for last 2 weeks. Here is my experience:
Sify:

Plus - Speed has never been a problem. Almost always get near about the speed of 256 kbps and sometimes even more.
cable operator is on call 7 days a week.
Minus - Last mile is handled by cable operator and cost cutting is the name of the game for them. Untrained staff, bad cables and frequent downtime.
Tata Indicom:

Plus - Excellent speed.
Minus - Bad customer care and support. I had to email the Country Head for VSNL broadband services to get things working. Infrastructure is not up to the mark.
Airtel BB:

Plus - Excellent customer support. Get he cell number of the local engineer and you never have to call crappy customer care execs.
Minus - Pathetic speed. If you buy 256 kbps connection, they give 128-256 which mostly works around 128 kbps only.
In last 2 weeks I have never seen above 192 kbps try as hard as I might.

Folks, I do agree for the lack of speed in speed999 plus plan for one must be aware that the speeds advertised nvr reach the customer, its a widely acceptable fact, but I am unhappy in a way coz 64 KBPS at night is actually only about 45-50 KBPS at night, so there is indeed a diff in commitment, we must write to Airtel and clarify why there is such a vast diff in speed.
airtel is the worst company offers their customer servicve… for hello tunes they r taking money… for deactivating also they r taking sucking airtel……
for a post paid activation they r offering 6 hours they r making in 6 days

I have been using Tata indicom broadband for the last 4 months, and I am sure it has to be one of the worst providers of internet. It is not the worst, I am afraid to think of the implications, because it means here in india, we are doomed to experience sucky internet all the days of our lives. I’m considering switching to Airtel and would appreciate it if some one who has used both can tell me objectively if airtel is much better than tata indicom.
I am especially interested to know Airtel’s response incase there is a no-browsing problem. In case of Tata, I had to call every single day for 2 weeks, to get them to finally come and fix the problem. at a minimum of 25 rupees a call, i paid more per day for calls to customer care than i did for the broadband, which is billed at 16 rupees per day.
For all those people out there i would like to say TATA indicom SUCKS
there is a difference between bandwidth and throughput. what u see in ur download manager is the rate at which the file is being downloaded by that program. Not the current throughput. well u have to be a network engineer to really figure out what ur total available bandwidth is. besides what u guys get in india is DSL. DSL speeds decrease as u go further away from the Central Office of the ISP. Get Cable Internet. That should get u out of this crap.
