MTNL and BSNL might launch OneIndia plan tomorrow
The owners of BSNL and MTNL phones would have something to cheer about if the incoming information from the news sources is true. The Indian government has shown interest in launching a uniform pricing for calling anywhere in India since quite sometime and now we might see some action finally by the state owned telecom companies.
Both BSNL and MTNL are expected to launch their much-awaited Re 1 a minute STD rates for their fixed line users on Monday. Reliance Infocomm was the first of the Indian companies to launch such a scheme for their customers and now the competition is expected to become more fierce with state owned companies joining the fray.
However, this scheme might cost a lot of money for both BSNL and MTNL as they are expected to make a loss with this scheme. Both these companies initially resisted the move by the government but have to give in to the demand from the telecom ministry. BSNL alone is expected to face a lose up to Rs 5,000 crore annually due to OneIndia tariff. However, increase in STD traffic would help it in the longer run.
