India adds 3.5 million GSM customers in January
The month of January was a good one for the mobile industry especially the GSM mobile operators. The month saw addition of 3.5 million new customers for the GSM operators in the country. Looks like the recently launched lifetime prepaid schemes have shown its effect luring in more customers for the mobile service providers in the country.
This makes January 2006 the best ever for the industry and it betters the month of December 2005 which saw addition of 3.2 million new subscribers. The total customer base for GSM mobile services is now around 62 million and it shows a growth of 6% compared to previous months.
Government owned telecom giant BSNL was the main beneficiary of this scheme as they themselves managed to get around 1.07 million new customers. Airtel came next with 1.04 million new customers. They are the largest GSM Mobile service providers in the country and leads BSNL in the overall user base throughout India.
Hutch saw its user base grow by 7.7 lakh new users and now has a total of 13.7 million customers. Idea gained 2.6 lakh new mobile users in January taking its total to 6.73 million.
