Motorola talking with Reliance over IPTV

US based tech giants Motorola are said to be talking with Indian telecom major Reliance over supplies of Internet-Protocol-TV set-top boxes which the latter is planning to offering in the Indian market soon.

India is scheduled to get access to IPTV technology with most of the bigger telecom players showing interest in entering the segment. Pat Canavan, Senior Vice-President, Global Marketing, and Portfolio management, Motorola said in a statement on these reports: “We have a set-top model that is completely compliant with the requirements specified in the Reliance tender, in particular that it should be compatible with Microsoft.”

Motorola developed these products in collaboration with Microsoft and AT&T and believes that Reliance could place an order for as many as 5 million set-top boxes. Other telecom players in India like BSNL and VSNL along with Bharti (Airtel) have also reported their plans to enter this segment.

Motorola has also said that if the demand for such set-top boxes is impressive enough, they might consider establishing a domestic manufacturing unit.
