Government considering cell phone users directory

The Indian government is once again giving a serious thought to the proposal of getting out a directory of mobile phone users on the similar likes as telephone directories for landline users in the country.

DoT Secretary J S Sarma said at a conference organized by ASSOCHAM on this proposal: “No definite proposal has been finalized but the telecom ministry is seriously considering the proposal of creating a directory of at least post-paid mobile subscribers.”

He added that if the proposal is passed by the government, each mobile service provider would be told to come out with a directory of users on their network. He also ensured that they would be taking enough security measures to prevent any lapses.

However, this is currently just a proposal and nothing is confirmed for now. Telecom Minister Dayanidhi Maran has invited suggestions from the telecom and mobile service providers on this initiative.

I think the directory of mobile phone user must be prepared at the earliest. The reason is the mobile phone no. is often used as contact no. in various business transactions & other similar activities. As at present there is no official directory of mobile user (post-paid & prepaid), we often face difficulties in contacting a person if his/her mobile is switched off or changed. This is also required from legal point of view. Moreover unscrupulus people often give false mobile no. etc.

    Thanks,

first ask teh government to force telepone directory for landlines of tata and reliance.
its growing to dangerous propotions where unsolicited calls come from reliance, tata and airtel landline no’s through out the day and there is no way to track them down.
i feel its a pack between these private co’s and regu.atos to increase the sales of their fixedline phones over the bsnl, which is forced to maintain such a directory
