BSNL Broadband Unlimited Data Transfer Package

As usual, this is breaking news on Broadband Blog.

After much wrangling, phone calls and abuses, BSNL has finally launched its unlimited access. The official notification is yet to come online- but it took enough grace on the behalf of Deputy Director General, Broadband, to give me a call and ask me to submit the application for the plan change.

For those who are following this Blog for regular updates- I would suggest that you submit your application before 1st May. Surprisingly, the Customer “Care” Centre is open on Sundays and before the billing plans change over, you’d be in a position to have the unlimited connection by 1st (hopefully). (The planned tariff is Rs 900 per month- decent I believe).

The “customer care” babu couldn’t think beyond the manual entry and was shunting me from one desk to another. I have seen the red tape and excessive fascination for rules and regulations from very close quarters. This is the naked fangs of Government of India in real life. I had to complain to the General Manager of my area to accept my application! Something that’s the job of a low-level clerk.

Arguably, the increased “competition” has made the things slightly better. BSNL has been forced to improve its service delivery; however, it remains a case of misguided enthusiasm. The average age of the customer care “executive” is 40+, which makes any enthusiasm on their behalf a BIG suspect. The men folk are pot bellied and sloppy; with reflexes so slow, that would shame a limping tortoise.

It would take some real genuine competition to shake up the things. Especially when the top heads are made responsible for the shrinking customer base. Shape up or ship out ought to be the new mantra.

There are indeed a lot of blemishes; the customer care toll free remains a model of apathy (what associated with BSNL isn’t) and despite the intentions to keep it as a central nodal agency for the complaints, it keeps you on a perpetual hold. A sorry instance of taxpayer’s money going down the shit hole.

Still, as the Broadband forums say, BSNL is government powered Broadband. We are happy to have something of substance, than be at the bottom of pyramid, like in Africa. Where arguably, the only instance of being alive is that well, you are alive.

It would take a huge post to list out the chronology of events/ chain emails/ mass mailings to the “honchos” of BSNL. I’d desist and instead focus on the other events as they are happening.

I’d like to end on a happy note here. Freedom from rationing access; and perhaps Broadband would deliver what it was supposed to do. A decent access finally. And perhaps for the FIRST time EVER in my LIFE. Unlimited Internet. Even if it crawls at 256k (best case scenario), I am happy.

    Hi Abhishek,
Thanks a lot for the breaking news on the blog about BSNL’s Unlimited plan @ 900 . I also got SMS from them on 29th April about the same. But when I went to meet the technical head of BSNL for my region, he told me that the scheme is nothing but a trick as you have to Pay Extra call charges …this is just so ridiculous if its true. ( As we know we can never trust what the Customer care/Babu/Working officers say as their info is never Updated with new schemes )
So please confirm about this extra call charges thing…thank you :)

here are the details on the new plan:

    http://bsnl.co.in/newsdetailed.php?news_id=296

the fact remains, many people are using BSNL line just for the net connectivity… if they don’t make calls, its just works fine for them.

maybe it’s time to get a second line just for the broadband connection.

I would like to ask a question and would be really grateful if you could answer me.

For 500+ plans other than 900, there is the option of “Night Unlimited (0200-0800)”. Does it imply that the user can download/upload any amount of data for this time without being charged anything for it even if the 1 GB or any other volume limit is exceeded?

I would be really grateful if you could help me with this (my e-mail address is the_liquid_moon@yahoo.com). Thanks.

zeus.. airtel and tata offer equally quick upload and download speeds..
unfortunately tata sucks and airtel is not very wide spread..
reports of downtime with airtel are also goin around..
so if u want a stable connect.. go for bsnl..
wanna risk a lil.. go for airtel..
    wanna blow money.. burn it..
if ur worried about the pollution.. then go for tata..

    Hi All,

I live in Pune and I urgently need to work from home due to a knee injury. I need to know which is the best option available from the broadband service providers in my area , i.e Indicom, Sify and Reliance.
I don’t have a landline, so it possible to have a BSNL broadband connection?

    Your suggestions are most welcome.

    Thanks in advance,

    Hemanth

We tend to sometimes take the “sarkari” institution for granted. Coming from a family which largely worked in the Public Sector, I do realize that say for example the line man may not be well versed with “english”. It is funny that top notch highly paid people in MNCs do not volunteer to themselves correct the problem, but tend to yell at the line man, there are thousands of blogs around and amazingly even sites like the linux lug which actually say that “the customer service doesnt know english, doesnt understand email blah blah” and if they are such a bunch of smart hackers who use linux, why dont they themselves pick up the technology and help the line man correct it? The fact that their service was bad, but has got better is an example that there are people up there who do listen. However note that PSUs were the 1st people to offer such low rates on broadband and only then the likes of the private sector followed suite.
Bottom line, dont take the PSUs for granted, they have their share of corruption i agree, but then they are the same set of guys who 1st got the cable to your house.
Better to have a motivated institution whom you try to help than to have an unmotivated institution or no institution at all!
