Spice to make handsets in India
Yet another mobile player is set to enter the Indian market as mobile service providers Spice Ltd has announced their plans to tap the surging demand for mobile phones in India. They would be making mobile phones here in India, as it is one of the fastest growing markets for mobile phones at the moment.
Spice Ltd. chief executive Kunal Ahuja said in a statement: “We are looking at making at least a million handsets in the first full year of operations. The factory should be ready by the end of this year, and make at least 100,000 units a month.”
The mobile tariffs are some of the lowest in the world and this has boosted the market for mobile phones as millions of new customers are added to this market. The Indian mobile market is largely dominated by the world’s largest mobile phone maker Nokia though many other players are expanding their approach to this market.
Spice is planning to target the mobile phone market with prices less than Rs. 5000. They are currently importing mobiles from abroad and sell them in northern and western parts of the country.
