Department of Telecom asks Reliance about their GSM plans
The Department of Telecom in India has asked the telecom company Reliance Communication to give them details on their plans with the GSM technology based mobile service.
Reliance is currently the largest player in the CDMA mobile service market and has asked the government to give them the spectrum for providing GSM technology based mobile services.
A DoT source said: “We have sought more details from Reliance on their roll-out plans on GSM. The company might have to vacate its current CDMA spectrum to get GSM spectrum for its roll-out. Our understanding is that they might completely switch over to GSM based mobile services and exit CDMA as they have sought spectrum for GSM wherever it is available in their application.”
Reliance already has around two crore CDMA based mobile subscribers and it might be complicated for them to leave the CDMA spectrum to get access to GSM one.
