Dayanidhi Maran wants cheaper international roaming charges for Indian consumers

Indian Telecom Minister, Dayanidhi Maran has expressed his opinion that the international roaming charges are too high at the moment for the Indian mobile users and he has asked worldwide GSM operators to bring down these prices.

Mobile charges in India are some of the lowest in the world and this has resulted in a boom in the mobile market. India is one of the fastest growing mobile markets and is adding millions of new customers every month.

As per market estimates, an Indian mobile user spends over Rs 100 a minute for making a call while roaming overseas. However, the charges vary from one service provider to another depending upon the deal signed between them and the Indian party.

It would be interesting to see if the GSM Association, which has over 700 operators as members takes some serious steps to bring down these charges. It would be yet another victory for the consumers.
