Ratan N Tata claims government policies harming telecom industry in India

Tata Group Chairman Ratan N Tata has said in a statement that the Indian government policies are harming the telecom industry in India.

Tata said that the regulatory procedures were impeding growth of the telecom industry in India.

He said while addressing shareholders at the annual general meeting of Tata Teleservices: “The government has imposed a lot of regulations, and is not permitting major technological upgrade.”

He particularly referred to the case where the government got the company to change TTML’s code numbers. It resulted in the loss of a huge number of subscribers for the company as most of the customers were not ready to change their old numbers.

Tata added: “The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India imposed a Rs 50 crore penalty on us for the Push-To-Talk call rate service. We had implemented this service after providing detailed information to TRAI. Despite this, we were charged a fine.”
