BSNL to offer STD calls at 1 rupee per minute
BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd) is the India’s largest telecom company in terms of sales. And the company has now announced their plans to cut long-distance call rates in a bid to boost usage.
It is also a step taken to ensure that existing customers do not move on to private operators like Airtel, which are rapidly expanding their services around the country.
The company said that fixed-line calls made between 23 zones, or circles, making up the telecoms sector would be priced at 1 rupee per minute. They are currently being charged at around 2.40 rupees a minute.
In addition, BSNL has also cut local call costs and monthly rentals. These new rates would be applicable starting next month and could result in a revenue loss of 21 billion rupees for the company.
However, the company hopes that the increased usage would somehow offset these losses.
