What is Sify Broadband’s unlimited bandwidth shared package that cost 600 bucks?

Cynicism?

It is a good deal if you do not want to surf. Better used for just downloading through out the day. Because if you happens to be on a network with lot of user on this package, the speeds you get during the day time won’t cross 2KBps. And with pings to local servers crossing 1000ms, you can be pretty sure that heavy pages would simply stop loading after a while due to server time out.

And well, there is another catch. Just because someone thought that for the sake of safety of users who forget to logout when they stop surfing… Keep checking your status every 30 minutes or so. Coz if something stops loading in between and the data transfer stops… the system will auto logout you from the server. So, do not be amazed to see your 600 Meg Linux download stuck in the morning just 5 Megs ahead of where you left it to download last night. Even better, sometimes you will find yourself logged out even when you are actively surfing. Some precautionary measures Sify probably designed for users who are heavy downloaders of open source software.

On the bright side, my backup seems to be back online. After almost pressurizing the CTO to give it back to me. Still an inverter based it seems. But it works without lights. So, I am happy…

Better than nothing. :p

SIFY has indeed attracted lot of customers in last few months by reducing the Unlimited Package rates to Rs 600 p.m.
And they claim in the beginning that speed will remain atround 48 Kbps and would never go below 32Kbps. Which is acceptable.

But as they call it a shared connection. They are trying to fool customers, by keeping a condition secret, which is never disclosed.

That condition is… after a download of 700 MB of data in month, the max speed you will get is 14 Kbps, until when the package is renewed.

And when a customer complains, they say, it’s a shared package, so speed will be around 14-16 Kbps.

Further they say… ok seems you are not satisfied with the speed, why don’t you go for another package, which is an expensive one ….

hmm not as bad as 14kbps… i hover around 24-32 kbps after download much more. it sucks but as long as something else do not arrive… i have to bear with it. I would most probably shift to gprs next month…

If you are in Delhi…. why don’t you join me, as you have so many complaints against sify. Within a week, I am going to consumer forum against Sify. And already conveyed them, they have asked for one week’s time to look into the complaint… which ends on Wednesday.

Hey Sify is one BIG ripoff.. its the exact opposite of the definition of broadband , its almost like they penalize you for downloading a certain amount of data everytime!!! In my case it was on a day to day basis. I noticed that everytime I downloaded more than 150Megs a day my connection was capped @ 2.5k/s. It was so slow even pages like rediff.com wouldnt load. And the customer service although responsive gives you loads of BS and coaxes you into buying better packages which are bigger ripoffs.

They block all ports they consider harmful including some p2p apps like bearshare and limewire AND Games like ragnarok. I had to hassle with the engineers for almost 2 weeks before they opened the ports for me and even after all that, bear share still doesnt work. The engineers say the port is open and when I call customer service they tell me the port will never be opened as a part of company policy against spyware.

What a bucket load of crap. If you have to even download a LITTLE bit from p2p appz dont bother with sify. ITS A RIP OFF!!!! *MAD*

I suggest using net4india or 24online based clients who give much better speeds albeit without 24 hour customer support. Hey !!! if ur getting better download speeds who needs customer support!!!

    :)

Sify sucks and does it suck! I think it’s the worst net service ever. The company should be kicked out of the business. There’s no hope of P2P ever working with SIFY. I’ve tried everything from Kaza to LImewire to SHareaza!!!!

Man, I got the faster SIFY connection because I thought it would let me get more from P2p, but Sify is a cheat!

Hate you sify! I am changing my connection!

Sify’s true unlimited connection is a big big fraud. They charge 1122 rs per month and the download speed that I am getting is 2-5kbps for normal file download. P2P is a not at all possible. I got cheated. I would advice please DO NOT go in for sify as they are a major fraud in the market.
