I just got informed that Hutch has arrived in Chandigarh and is offering GRPS internet connectivity at 99 bucks a month. Which I totally find unbelievable. Airtel is offering same connectivity at 600 bucks. Since, I do have a GRPS enabled mobile handset (Panasonic GD 88), Why not use it instead of Sify Broadband which has literally made my life living hell! So, here is the deal… Any users visiting here have any information, please help me out! I will in the time being, go out and venture into the markets to gather some on my own! God help Sify, if indeed Airtel GRPS is faster than Sify’s Unlimited Bandwidth Pack!

Update:

This is what I got from Hutch Customer Care and Airtel Dealership

Hutch is offering GPRS on prepaid mobiles at 99 bucks. That is cool. What is not cool is the fact that data transfer is charged extra. So, every bit and byte that transfer through the phone will cost you. You cannot use this connection for internet on Computers.

Hutch is also offering GPRS on Computers at around 400-500 (do not remember the exact figure) with speeds of 40kbps. But it is only applicable on Post Paid connections.

Airtel is only offering GPRS on prepaid cards when you buy a specific model mobile phone from them. This costs 600 bucks for 48 kbps speeds.

And for post paid services you can get GPRS connectivity for connections to computers at same price.

Disclaimer: This is what I got from the customer support people. It can be inaccurate and totally false. If you have any updates or corrections, just leave a comment.

The end result is that, I won’t make a switch because I do not want to get into the mess post paid connections can be. I had rather wait for Tata Indicom or Touchtel DSL or maybe even Bharat Broadband.

I work at Hutch and can confirm that there is no extra charge for data transfer on the Rs. 99 pack. It is just Rs. 99 (monthly rental) and available on Postpaid as well as prepaid. MMS is complimentary with it. You get access to more than 50 million WAP sites at no extra cost. You are charged only if you download anything that is charged on a chargeable WAP site.
The other service (Hutch Access) is the Rs. 499 pack. That gives unlimited data access (complete WWW) at no extra cost. This has been recently modified and will cost Rs. 199 as a rental and data transfer charges at 50p per 10 Kb.

I use airtel at 99 rupees and its atleast 8 KBPS at any time. MUCH MUCH better than any cable or dial up internet provider in calcutta. I LOVE IT. If you are a serious internet junkie, go for airtel mobile connection and opt for www service, Rs.99 per month and its a beauty.

I am an AIRTEL chennai prepaid customer using GPRS service provided by the operator through my NOKIA 3510i. For the past 3 months I have been accessing number of sites that proveide free contents by searching thruogh Google wap search. Abd I had downloaded number of Games free from variuos wap sites like GAMELOFT and they are much better than the Games offered by my operator which costs me Rs.50 to Rs.99. So for I had recived the GPRS DATA 65327.651KB . If you calculate by means of DATA charge say 50paise for 10 kb it would be Rs0.50×6532.7651= 3266.35…! By knowing these kind of activiies Now Airtel Had Blocked all other addresses other than its own Home page where it charges everything. So I dont want to download any thing silly from their site. I am searching for some way to get full access. If any one knows how to cheat our operators kindly Help me…..(But I Think it is our operators they are ultimately going to cheat us….)

Rajesh, and anyone else out there planning to use Airtel prepaid… please note that sometime ago in January 2005, airtel disabled the GPRS access for prepaid customers. Their untrained customer service people continue to claim that they have gprs access. but it is only to ONE SINGLE SITE, thats http://live.airtelworld.com. Also, 90% of the content on this website is chargeable (starting from Rs.10 for each news article!!!). So Airtel prepaid customers have no means to access any other site. If you want full gprs on airtel, u have to opt for their postpaid plan. hutch continues to offer full gprs for prepaid customers at a flat rate of Rs.99 per month.

    Hey Guyz n Gurlz,
This is Eddie from Bangalore, i work for Dell as a senior technician. this is a serious advice. listen… if ur in bangalore and prefer GPRS more than anything else on the phone.. then go for HUTCH. Airtel’s GPRS is gone for a big toss. If you are looking out for good and clear network, then go for AIRTEL. its like the saying… you got to loose something to gain something. You can’t have both in one folks. Try and understand. Thats why i have both AIRTEL and HUTCH postpaid. ;-) Life is “just” - ENJOY MAADI!!

Hello I am from Pune, I am using AirTel GPRS(150 Rs per month) through Samsung C100 mobile(Rs 4700) and a datacable (Rs 300) connected to my PC[People using net inside mobile accessing WAP sites are nothing but are stupids :-) bcoz the quality, data content access depends upon the mobile we choose]. The driver cd included with the GPRS software. Just we have to make connection. Is VV simple. Speed/bandwidth is just 14 KBPS — thats ok(in Rs 150 pm).
    Advantages:
    1]Its cheapest net connection
    2]Full time use+ downloads ( NO EXTRA COST!!!!!) ;-)
    3]Can be connected to PC,Laptop
    4]No extra modem charges
5]Better than BSNL/VSNL dialups -always on peak hours –never connects on time.

    What u think??

I am fed up with my cable service provide because the wired solutions are giving too many problems. Also I download too much data so I want a unlimited download package. Also ofcourse I need to use internet on my PC not on mobile phone.
Please tell if any other service would be better than this and whether there is any downside to reliance.
    Thanks & Regards

I m using Airtel gprs @ Rs 500 per month. If I open any Website and save any image from that Website, would that be considered a download? Will Airtel charge me for saving images?

Most of whats said above about Airtel GPRS is largely a misunderstanding. Airtel GPRS is the most cost effective and fastest Internet connectivity available across Mobile networks and charges nothing extra for whatever you download. What more can you ask for 24X7 internet access :: Unlimited usage all for such low cost

    hi folks,
i have been using airtel gprs for abt 6 months now and got it working the hard way. so let me offer u sum solutions(if it can help):
1)AIRTEL SUCKS-know it, believe it and accept it as a fact. no point in complaining-the whole customer support is a big sham and aitel is a looter.period.(yes mr airtel executive, this is cumulative experiences of several ppl who wud have had ur balls if india courts were as good as us,but its unfortunate)
    2)charges :99 rs/month.no download costs.
3)be prepared to see network breakdown anytime.
4)settings for airtel gprs using 6600 nokia:
    username:98….
    password:leave it blank.
    ip address:0.0.0.0.
    apn:airtelgrps.com
    security:normal
    prompt for password :no
add at commands required for connecting thru bluetooth
5)dont call on 7477 or sum no cutomercare gives u ..its 4 rs /min….looters have always sum way of fooling we customers.
    enjoy guys….

Got to read so much confused comments by a lot of ppl. Let me clear the myth. Hutch is the best GPRS (for PCs) provider (till date) in the country with good download speeds and uptime. wud u believe i’ve downloaded more than 750MB in less than 15dayz of using my HUTCH Access. that too at a cost of just Rs.499 per month and no extra cost. The speed depends on the handset and mode of connection u use. Data cables and bluetooth rocks. dont get yer hands dirty with IR. I use a Nokia 6610 with DKU-5 data cable. U can chk yer Hutch Access plans in yer circle. mine is Uttaranchal here its jst Rs.499 and thr’s no extra charge. Beware of Reliance, they r cheaters.

i tried the airtel GPRS, but the speeds were pathetic. no doubt that reliance package is a lot faster. maybe 4 times. i got my GPRS disconnected within 2 days of use from airtel. Also getting the GPRS started was a nightmare and took almost 10 days. each time you get to the customer care, a new executive is there to listen to the problem from the beginning and will promise to get it resolved, but nothing happens. infact i was being charged for GPRS rental while actually it was not even activated. (the billing department started billing me without bothering to find out if the GPRS was working!!! but nothing matches the internet on cable from VSNL at 512 KBPS. So the GPRS part is only for people on the move, especially out of station. and dont think that Rs 500 they charge per month is very cheap, since that is the quantity of data you should expect. (remember slow speeds)

but if one is always on the move, reliance is the best choice with laptops. for PDA’s without a serial RS232 but a bluetooth, maybe airtel is fine.

but people fedup with huge dialup bills, the best bet is the broadband or cable, with VSNL as low as Rs 450 per month for 500MB. dont even think of mobile data.

  125. nirmal | June 24th, 2005 at 06:43 pm

hi people!…..well to start with iam nirmal under airtel kerala circle….well i have been an airtel gprs subscriber for more than 4 months now(can b more)…now see, how ever speedy the connection may b if ur mobile phone doesnt support the latest class of gprs then u will experiance a laggy internet experiance….pals, there are diffrent classes of gprs modules…like class 6 class 8 n class 10( may b there are more but till date in mobile phones we have seen only till class 10)…ok …at first when i had got their gprs connected i wosnt able to enjoy the internet coz of the slow speed…as ma phone was nokia 6600(class 6) then ….but la8er when i switched on to nokia 7710(class10)…i really feel the diffrence….now as i read through all the comment this is wat i figure out….those people using a class 6 gprs phone are experiancing a low transfer rate…and those who are using a class 8 or 10 are enjoying themself on the net…ok here somebody asked which one is the best phone ‘roun to b used for accessing net(via gprs of course…hey EDGE is also bot to come out soon wut more speedy transfer rate…but fer the timebeing lets not discuss bot it)…well as i already said class 8 phones like p800,p900,p910i…etc and class 10 phones …like 6630,6680/81,7710,6021(i think it is the cheapest phone<rs> wut a class 10 gprs and bluetooth xept fer the fact that it lacks camera),3230,6230 and many more new phones…but what i had actually used 6600,6630,6230 and 7710(presently)…as far as my experiance with these phones as an internet modem for ur pc/laptop…i had problem of slow connection with 6600, as it is a class6 gprs phone, and 6630 which has a low ram (only 10 mb where as 6600 had ’round 24mb ..and most of the time u get only 5-6mb free memory) this phone restarted a lot coz of this lack of memory reason, and now bot 6230 ..well my god …this phone presented me wut a miserable net surfing experiance even though it wos class 10…the reason being that it was a nokia OS phone( and not a SYMBIAN OS one…for further detailed bot this contact me through email)every 30-40 seconds i had to reconnect the phone…or redial …..but then now iam very much happy with the phone i have and the internet speed it offers to me…7710 ie… one of my friend has got 3230 which is also a good tool fer surfing the net….just fer ur info (not fer people who already kno bot it)–u wont get calls while ur gprs is busy…no problem if u r conmnected to the net through gprs…but if there is some data transfer process(like if u r downloading something) u wont get ur incoming calls….
now some one ased which one the best way to connect ur phone to the pc….well the best i would say is through data cable…coz the next best one -ie through bluetooth- will drain ur batt. like hell…haa what more should i say if i tell u that…those viruses which infect these phone(like cabir) doent do any harm otherthan jst turning on ur bluetooth on and searching fer new devices nearby to jst get into it and to carry on the same process….now i am clear…now about infra red, well its a slow mode of connection if u r using it to transfer data but if its fer linking ur phones modem to the computer i dont see any wrong in the speed…coz alredy the speed of airtel or hutch or any provider wont b as fast as 115.2kbps(NOTE:iam talking bot gprs)..but the problem with ir is that u have to keep the phone lined up to the infrared port of the computer which is not very easy if u are on the move and the connection sometimes get cut too and u start to hear a noisy alarm kindda sound from the pc speaker letting u kno the link is cut( i mean the infra red link and not the gprs and ofcourse if infrared link is cut naturally the gprs link to the pc will also get cut)…so always good is to use the data cable….
    Now about my connectin plans…
    ——————————–
my gprs provider AIRTEL(i had used both pre-paid and postpaid)
monthly gprs rent (in addition to my mobile bill ) Rs.250/month..
both prost paid and pre-paid had the same data transfer rate of about 3-12 kbps(3kbps at peak hours and i had only once or twice had experiaced it….most of the time it remains ’round 8kbps….thats a good speed as i can now download a complete song within 6-7 mins(and i do)…
    so now thats it…any more help needed …hmmm E-mail me @ njan_ivide@bluebottle.com

hi people!…..well to start with iam nirmal under airtel kerala circle….well i have been an airtel gprs subscriber for more than 4 months now(can b more)…now see, how ever speedy the connection may b if ur mobile phone doesnt support the latest class of gprs then u will experiance a laggy internet experiance….pals, there are diffrent classes of gprs modules…like class 6 class 8 n class 10( may b there are more but till date in mobile phones we have seen only till class 10)…ok …at first when i had got their gprs connected i wosnt able to enjoy the internet coz of the slow speed…as ma phone was nokia 6600(class 6) then ….but la8er when i switched on to nokia 7710(class10)…i really feel the diffrence….now as i read through all the comment this is wat i figure out….those people using a class 6 gprs phone are experiancing a low transfer rate…and those who are using a class 8 or 10 are enjoying themself on the net…ok here somebody asked which one is the best phone ‘roun to b used for accessing net(via gprs of course…hey EDGE is also bot to come out soon wut more speedy transfer rate…but fer the timebeing lets not discuss bot it)…well as i already said class 8 phones like p800,p900,p910i…etc and class 10 phones …like 6630,6680/81,7710,6021(i think it is the cheapest phone wut a class 10 gprs and bluetooth xept fer the fact that it lacks camera),3230,6230 and many more new phones…but what i had actually used 6600,6630,6230 and 7710(presently)…as far as my experiance with these phones as an internet modem for ur pc/laptop…i had problem of slow connection with 6600, as it is a class6 gprs phone, and 6630 which has a low ram (only 10 mb where as 6600 had ’round 24mb ..and most of the time u get only 5-6mb free memory) this phone restarted a lot coz of this lack of memory reason, and now bot 6230 ..well my god …this phone presented me wut a miserable net surfing experiance even though it wos class 10…the reason being that it was a nokia OS phone( and not a SYMBIAN OS one…for further detailed bot this contact me through email)every 30-40 seconds i had to reconnect the phone…or redial …..but then now iam very much happy with the phone i have and the internet speed it offers to me…7710 ie… one of my friend has got 3230 which is also a good tool fer surfing the net….just fer ur info (not fer people who already kno bot it)–u wont get calls while ur gprs is busy…no problem if u r conmnected to the net through gprs…but if there is some data transfer process(like if u r downloading something) u wont get ur incoming calls….
now some one ased which one the best way to connect ur phone to the pc….well the best i would say is through data cable…coz the next best one -ie through bluetooth- will drain ur batt. like hell…haa what more should i say if i tell u that…those viruses which infect these phone(like cabir) doent do any harm otherthan jst turning on ur bluetooth on and searching fer new devices nearby to jst get into it and to carry on the same process….now i am clear…now about infra red, well its a slow mode of connection if u r using it to transfer data but if its fer linking ur phones modem to the computer i dont see any wrong in the speed…coz alredy the speed of airtel or hutch or any provider wont b as fast as 115.2kbps(NOTE:iam talking bot gprs)..but the problem with ir is that u have to keep the phone lined up to the infrared port of the computer which is not very easy if u are on the move and the connection sometimes get cut too and u start to hear a noisy alarm kindda sound from the pc speaker letting u kno the link is cut( i mean the infra red link and not the gprs and ofcourse if infrared link is cut naturally the gprs link to the pc will also get cut)…so always good is to use the data cable….
    Regards……..

I was using Idea GPRS in delhi under the 500 monthly rental plan but they charged me at 2 paise per kb because of their system error which took the bill to over 20,000 RS!!! they didn’t even have a credit limit to block the services! don’t go for Idea, specially not for gprs, its absolutely bogus and risky!
