Airtel and Hutch GRPS Internet Connectivity in Panchkula/Chandigarh
August 19th, 2004 Leave a comment Visited 485 times, 6 so far today
I just got informed that Hutch has arrived in Chandigarh and is offering GRPS internet connectivity at 99 bucks a month. Which I totally find unbelievable. Airtel is offering same connectivity at 600 bucks. Since, I do have a GRPS enabled mobile handset (Panasonic GD 88), Why not use it instead of Sify Broadband which has literally made my life living hell! So, here is the deal… Any users visiting here have any information, please help me out! I will in the time being, go out and venture into the markets to gather some on my own! God help Sify, if indeed Airtel GRPS is faster than Sify’s Unlimited Bandwidth Pack!
Update:
This is what I got from Hutch Customer Care and Airtel Dealership
Hutch is offering GPRS on prepaid mobiles at 99 bucks. That is cool. What is not cool is the fact that data transfer is charged extra. So, every bit and byte that transfer through the phone will cost you. You cannot use this connection for internet on Computers.
Hutch is also offering GPRS on Computers at around 400-500 (do not remember the exact figure) with speeds of 40kbps. But it is only applicable on Post Paid connections.
Airtel is only offering GPRS on prepaid cards when you buy a specific model mobile phone from them. This costs 600 bucks for 48 kbps speeds.
And for post paid services you can get GPRS connectivity for connections to computers at same price.
Disclaimer: This is what I got from the customer support people. It can be inaccurate and totally false. If you have any updates or corrections, just leave a comment.
The end result is that, I won’t make a switch because I do not want to get into the mess post paid connections can be. I had rather wait for Tata Indicom or Touchtel DSL or maybe even Bharat Broadband.

I work at Hutch and can confirm that there is no extra charge for data transfer on the Rs. 99 pack. It is just Rs. 99 (monthly rental) and available on Postpaid as well as prepaid. MMS is complimentary with it. You get access to more than 50 million WAP sites at no extra cost. You are charged only if you download anything that is charged on a chargeable WAP site.
The other service (Hutch Access) is the Rs. 499 pack. That gives unlimited data access (complete WWW) at no extra cost. This has been recently modified and will cost Rs. 199 as a rental and data transfer charges at 50p per 10 Kb.

I use airtel at 99 rupees and its atleast 8 KBPS at any time. MUCH MUCH better than any cable or dial up internet provider in calcutta. I LOVE IT. If you are a serious internet junkie, go for airtel mobile connection and opt for www service, Rs.99 per month and its a beauty.

I am an AIRTEL chennai prepaid customer using GPRS service provided by the operator through my NOKIA 3510i. For the past 3 months I have been accessing number of sites that proveide free contents by searching thruogh Google wap search. Abd I had downloaded number of Games free from variuos wap sites like GAMELOFT and they are much better than the Games offered by my operator which costs me Rs.50 to Rs.99. So for I had recived the GPRS DATA 65327.651KB . If you calculate by means of DATA charge say 50paise for 10 kb it would be Rs0.50×6532.7651= 3266.35…! By knowing these kind of activiies Now Airtel Had Blocked all other addresses other than its own Home page where it charges everything. So I dont want to download any thing silly from their site. I am searching for some way to get full access. If any one knows how to cheat our operators kindly Help me…..(But I Think it is our operators they are ultimately going to cheat us….)

Rajesh, and anyone else out there planning to use Airtel prepaid… please note that sometime ago in January 2005, airtel disabled the GPRS access for prepaid customers. Their untrained customer service people continue to claim that they have gprs access. but it is only to ONE SINGLE SITE, thats http://live.airtelworld.com. Also, 90% of the content on this website is chargeable (starting from Rs.10 for each news article!!!). So Airtel prepaid customers have no means to access any other site. If you want full gprs on airtel, u have to opt for their postpaid plan. hutch continues to offer full gprs for prepaid customers at a flat rate of Rs.99 per month.

airtel gprs is not a gprs at all. it is vey narrow minded business
of these monopalositic people. i am intended to shift from airtel to some other network. they are thinking that they can restrict their customers only to their to useless airtel live wap which is a junk one. customers are the kings, airtel should treat them like that not like fools.

Hey Guyz n Gurlz,
This is Eddie from Bangalore, i work for Dell as a senior technician. this is a serious advice. listen… if ur in bangalore and prefer GPRS more than anything else on the phone.. then go for HUTCH. Airtel’s GPRS is gone for a big toss. If you are looking out for good and clear network, then go for AIRTEL. its like the saying… you got to loose something to gain something. You can’t have both in one folks. Try and understand. Thats why i have both AIRTEL and HUTCH postpaid. ;-) Life is “just” – ENJOY MAADI!!
*** SORRY, I don’t know about any other city, coz i don’t care about other cities.. coz bangalore ROCKS!! ***

Hello I am from Pune, I am using AirTel GPRS(150 Rs per month) through Samsung C100 mobile(Rs 4700) and a datacable (Rs 300) connected to my PC[People using net inside mobile accessing WAP sites are nothing but are stupids :-) bcoz the quality, data content access depends upon the mobile we choose]. The driver cd included with the GPRS software. Just we have to make connection. Is VV simple. Speed/bandwidth is just 14 KBPS — thats ok(in Rs 150 pm).
Advantages:
1]Its cheapest net connection
2]Full time use+ downloads ( NO EXTRA COST!!!!!) ;-)
3]Can be connected to PC,Laptop
4]No extra modem charges
5]Better than BSNL/VSNL dialups -always on peak hours –never connects on time.
What u think??

Reliance = Best at bandwidth when it comes to GPRS.
Downside? Hefty bills if you are a download freak, on a postpaid connection of course.

Hi
Iam planning of purchasing reliance rconnect i.e. internet through reliance mobile.
I am fed up with my cable service provide because the wired solutions are giving too many problems. Also I download too much data so I want a unlimited download package. Also ofcourse I need to use internet on my PC not on mobile phone.
Please tell if any other service would be better than this and whether there is any downside to reliance.
Thanks & Regards

I m using Airtel gprs @ Rs 500 per month. If I open any Website and save any image from that Website, would that be considered a download? Will Airtel charge me for saving images?

Most of whats said above about Airtel GPRS is largely a misunderstanding. Airtel GPRS is the most cost effective and fastest Internet connectivity available across Mobile networks and charges nothing extra for whatever you download. What more can you ask for 24X7 internet access :: Unlimited usage all for such low cost

hi folks,
i have been using airtel gprs for abt 6 months now and got it working the hard way. so let me offer u sum solutions(if it can help):
1)AIRTEL SUCKS-know it, believe it and accept it as a fact. no point in complaining-the whole customer support is a big sham and aitel is a looter.period.(yes mr airtel executive, this is cumulative experiences of several ppl who wud have had ur balls if india courts were as good as us,but its unfortunate)
2)charges :99 rs/month.no download costs.
3)be prepared to see network breakdown anytime.
4)settings for airtel gprs using 6600 nokia:
username:98….
password:leave it blank.
ip address:0.0.0.0.
apn:airtelgrps.com
security:normal
prompt for password :no
add at commands required for connecting thru bluetooth
5)dont call on 7477 or sum no cutomercare gives u ..its 4 rs /min….looters have always sum way of fooling we customers.
enjoy guys….

Got to read so much confused comments by a lot of ppl. Let me clear the myth. Hutch is the best GPRS (for PCs) provider (till date) in the country with good download speeds and uptime. wud u believe i’ve downloaded more than 750MB in less than 15dayz of using my HUTCH Access. that too at a cost of just Rs.499 per month and no extra cost. The speed depends on the handset and mode of connection u use. Data cables and bluetooth rocks. dont get yer hands dirty with IR. I use a Nokia 6610 with DKU-5 data cable. U can chk yer Hutch Access plans in yer circle. mine is Uttaranchal here its jst Rs.499 and thr’s no extra charge. Beware of Reliance, they r cheaters.

i tried the airtel GPRS, but the speeds were pathetic. no doubt that reliance package is a lot faster. maybe 4 times. i got my GPRS disconnected within 2 days of use from airtel. Also getting the GPRS started was a nightmare and took almost 10 days. each time you get to the customer care, a new executive is there to listen to the problem from the beginning and will promise to get it resolved, but nothing happens. infact i was being charged for GPRS rental while actually it was not even activated. (the billing department started billing me without bothering to find out if the GPRS was working!!! but nothing matches the internet on cable from VSNL at 512 KBPS. So the GPRS part is only for people on the move, especially out of station. and dont think that Rs 500 they charge per month is very cheap, since that is the quantity of data you should expect. (remember slow speeds)
but if one is always on the move, reliance is the best choice with laptops. for PDA’s without a serial RS232 but a bluetooth, maybe airtel is fine.
but people fedup with huge dialup bills, the best bet is the broadband or cable, with VSNL as low as Rs 450 per month for 500MB. dont even think of mobile data.

hi people!…..well to start with iam nirmal under airtel kerala circle….well i have been an airtel gprs subscriber for more than 4 months now(can b more)…now see, how ever speedy the connection may b if ur mobile phone doesnt support the latest class of gprs then u will experiance a laggy internet experiance….pals, there are diffrent classes of gprs modules…like class 6 class 8 n class 10( may b there are more but till date in mobile phones we have seen only till class 10)…ok …at first when i had got their gprs connected i wosnt able to enjoy the internet coz of the slow speed…as ma phone was nokia 6600(class 6) then ….but la8er when i switched on to nokia 7710(class10)…i really feel the diffrence….now as i read through all the comment this is wat i figure out….those people using a class 6 gprs phone are experiancing a low transfer rate…and those who are using a class 8 or 10 are enjoying themself on the net…ok here somebody asked which one is the best phone ‘roun to b used for accessing net(via gprs of course…hey EDGE is also bot to come out soon wut more speedy transfer rate…but fer the timebeing lets not discuss bot it)…well as i already said class 8 phones like p800,p900,p910i…etc and class 10 phones …like 6630,6680/81,7710,6021(i think it is the cheapest phone wut a class 10 gprs and bluetooth xept fer the fact that it lacks camera),3230,6230 and many more new phones…but what i had actually used 6600,6630,6230 and 7710(presently)…as far as my experiance with these phones as an internet modem for ur pc/laptop…i had problem of slow connection with 6600, as it is a class6 gprs phone, and 6630 which has a low ram (only 10 mb where as 6600 had ’round 24mb ..and most of the time u get only 5-6mb free memory) this phone restarted a lot coz of this lack of memory reason, and now bot 6230 ..well my god …this phone presented me wut a miserable net surfing experiance even though it wos class 10…the reason being that it was a nokia OS phone( and not a SYMBIAN OS one…for further detailed bot this contact me through email)every 30-40 seconds i had to reconnect the phone…or redial …..but then now iam very much happy with the phone i have and the internet speed it offers to me…7710 ie… one of my friend has got 3230 which is also a good tool fer surfing the net….just fer ur info (not fer people who already kno bot it)–u wont get calls while ur gprs is busy…no problem if u r conmnected to the net through gprs…but if there is some data transfer process(like if u r downloading something) u wont get ur incoming calls….
now some one ased which one the best way to connect ur phone to the pc….well the best i would say is through data cable…coz the next best one -ie through bluetooth- will drain ur batt. like hell…haa what more should i say if i tell u that…those viruses which infect these phone(like cabir) doent do any harm otherthan jst turning on ur bluetooth on and searching fer new devices nearby to jst get into it and to carry on the same process….now i am clear…now about infra red, well its a slow mode of connection if u r using it to transfer data but if its fer linking ur phones modem to the computer i dont see any wrong in the speed…coz alredy the speed of airtel or hutch or any provider wont b as fast as 115.2kbps(NOTE:iam talking bot gprs)..but the problem with ir is that u have to keep the phone lined up to the infrared port of the computer which is not very easy if u are on the move and the connection sometimes get cut too and u start to hear a noisy alarm kindda sound from the pc speaker letting u kno the link is cut( i mean the infra red link and not the gprs and ofcourse if infrared link is cut naturally the gprs link to the pc will also get cut)…so always good is to use the data cable….
Now about my connectin plans…
——————————–
my gprs provider AIRTEL(i had used both pre-paid and postpaid)
monthly gprs rent (in addition to my mobile bill ) Rs.250/month..
both prost paid and pre-paid had the same data transfer rate of about 3-12 kbps(3kbps at peak hours and i had only once or twice had experiaced it….most of the time it remains ’round 8kbps….thats a good speed as i can now download a complete song within 6-7 mins(and i do)…
so now thats it…any more help needed …hmmm E-mail me @ njan_ivide@bluebottle.com…
Regards……..

I was using Idea GPRS in delhi under the 500 monthly rental plan but they charged me at 2 paise per kb because of their system error which took the bill to over 20,000 RS!!! they didn’t even have a credit limit to block the services! don’t go for Idea, specially not for gprs, its absolutely bogus and risky!

ok guys here is how i configured ma laptop to access net through airtel gprs…
my bluetooth is WINDCOM ver.1.4.2.10
1.After when i installed the bluetooth driver…i paired my phone with my computer…
2.then i opened the blutooth driver and connected my phone and setup the dialup connection(this process differs in differnt BT drivers..so iam jst talkin in general)…and the dialup no. is *99***1# for airtel…donno bot others..
3.now some times when u dialup thru bluetooth or any connection fer that matter…u will need a connection string to get the pc connected to the net …so that is wat i provided in my previous messages….ok now the question is where to put in this string…go to control panel in there open “phone and modem options”…click the modems tab…u should see bluetooth modem under modems….now select it and click properties(or double click it)..now press the advanced tab…there u will see the space fer feeding in the string…do it and thats it….ur all set….
haaa and for all this u dont need to install nokia pc suit(no prob if u have it already …u can do it without too)…as a matter of fact i havnt yet installed pc suit and still wryting this comment thru gprs of course wut ma comp…
hope its clear…

Hi, i came to gujarat for a couple of months. I activated Airtel Live and most of the time when i goto any site it says “Access Denied” which i soon realised was because Airtel Live blocks out everyother site except its own. But… sometimes if i connect 10-20 times its DOES allow full access under Live itself…strange, must be buggy.
One more thing Mobile office here costs 600/month where as in kerala its only 250. WHy is that?

Hello everybody,
I have bought a Nokia 3220, tried to get the settings for
GPRS access to Airtel Live, but found that the settings file
I received in reply to the SMS (’LIVE’ to 646) was not recognized
by my mobile. Has anyone faced a similar problem? What is the solution
for this? I can’t even find a way to provide the settings manually
(eg. where do I set the proxy server IP ?)

Santanu

Hi! People. Never ever go with Airtel. As “diggs999″ in his comments said above (You can search the name “diggs999″ by “Find” feature of your browser) that “be prepared to see network breakdown anytime” This fact is 100% true.
I am a subsriber of Airtel Postpaid plan with GPRS (Mobile Office) nearby CHANDIGARH but now from past 2 months I m facing the GPRS problem due their networking in my area. You won’t believe me that I m calling their customer care from last 2 months. I have sent 6 emails to their Technical Support Team. I have even sent many SMS (i don’t even remeber how many sms) to their customer support number which is 121. But they have not contacted me.
Even their customer care executives have ready made answers. You told them some problem and they will give totally different solution not related to your problem. For example I told them several times that I have my area specific network problem due which I am not able to use GPRS from 8:30 am (morning) sharp to 12:00 pm (midnight) and they always suggests me to change my mobile set (I have nokia 6610 purchased 10 months ago), change their IP, change dialing number, even change their SIM card! What A Hell! Most people in their customer care are newcomers. Even a customer like me knows problem better than those executives. My total Call time to their GPRS customer care is appx. 1 Hour 48 minutes! from last 2 months and even then they are not able to resolve my problem.
Some people here may say that this is surely the problem of my mobile set or data cable. Then I wanna say those people that I have latest firmware in my phone (firmware version 5.63) and my data cable is nokia original worth 1800 bucks! All my windows xp with sp2 have latest driver and last but not least whenever I change my location or area then GPRS works fine with the same set then how it can be problem with my mobile set or data cable. The problem is 100% from their area specific networking which is unfortunatly my area where my house is.
So you all guys pray to God that Airtel should not have area specific network problem in your area becuase if you have then Airtel will suck, suck and suck you, your pocket and your life without any rigid solution from their side.
My personal experience and also my friends experience with Airtel says that “NEVER EVER GO WITH AIRTEL” If you need internet connection then go for some good and real solution. Airtel will only work for first 5 months when you subscribe for them and then they send you to their iggy(Ignore) bin after 5 or 6 months. They have so much networking problems.
Some people in above posts are saying that they have 8 KBPS (8 killo byte per second)connection with Airtel GPRS. So i wanna say about them that they are just f*ckin’ lamers and liars. GPRS can’t give u more than 3KBPS(Killo byte per second) or 33kbps (33 Killo bits per second) even with class 10 GPRS phone.
1 byte = 8 bit + some parity bit for error checking in networking.
Even now when I m posting this post, I m on GPRS and it is F*ckin’ Slow (only 4 MB in one hour!). It is like hell for me. If they don’t solve my problem within next 2 days then I m gonna apply for disconnection on 3rd day from today. As I said earlier that I have called their GPRS customer care several times. What they do everytime is just forward my request to their team which never call back me or solve my problem. It even getting worse. O! my god. Go to hell Airtel. You sucks my life. You are frustrating me. I am remembering those good days when I apply for your connection and you were good like a heaven but now you are just hell, hell and even worse hell.
:(
My 2 good advices to people (only for those who are wise enough to follow them):
1. If you need some mobile service then go for BSNL or something good like that (what so ever in your area). Here in my area people are mad behind BSNL SIM cards and even these cards are being sold in Black (i mean more cost for SIM)
2. If you need Internet connection then don’t go for quality wise cheap solutions like Airtel GPRS or others as they have really weak and bad infrastructure can’t provide data transmission(internet) services as they are mainly mobile service provider and not dedicated internet provider. So for internet go for some good dedicated service. Because if you go for such cheap solution thinking that it is light on your pocket and can’t afford other dedicated services then don’t go for internet at all today. Wait for some time for some dedicated internet providers to lower their cost in your area. Because going with cheaper (in both manners i.e. quality and cost) solutions like Airtel GPRS or others will be only a monthly load on your pocket giving no advantage at all but only frustrations and tension due their low speed, networking problems etc. Don’t ever go for AIRTEL or some other shit like that. They are hell sucking your money drilling your pocket. What they need is only your money they really don’t care about their customers atleast my experience with them says so. I think there are also others being frustrated by their bad (really bad) infrastructure.
Thanks for reading.

Pardeep.

how to use gprs in airtel connection
July 18th, 2005 at 06:47 pm
It all not so bad ,as told by pradeep it depends on handset as well as the location.
Iam been using Airtel for more than 3years i havent faced such concerns , Gprs is always to say connected on move and for some who has very high usage airtel is providing Broad band connection as well as Airtel data card were u expe high speed and flaw less connectivity .
Airtel as 4 different product For Gprs
1)Airtel live: (wap not gprs ,u will have access to only airtel portal no rental only downloads, and has tie up with all the leading contend providers in market)
2)Airtel Online:(wap not gprs, u can acess morethan 50million wap sites, also u can acess yahoo mail as far as my expe, u can only browse on mobile)Renatl 99/- download charges as per the site u acess no charge from Airtel
3)Mobile Office: (ull fledge Gprs u can browse all the sites and also u can connect to laptop or desktop using ur mobile as modem)600/-rent download again suject to site
4)Black Berry: handheld inbox has to be bought for this ,instant email acess, u can acess ur cop mail while on roam, nationaly as well as int(cost aroung 16000/- to 32000/-
5)Airtel Data card : intial investment of 12000/- req to get a card
new launch.

Mr. Arun if u have no such problem with Airtel for past 3 year then that’s doesn’t mean that Airtel is always good. Anybody who have bad experience with any company can told his experience. If company is good with one kinda person in some location and not good with others in other location doesn’t mean company is always good because it has been good with u always.
More over as in above post Mr. pardeep has already said that “Some people here may say that this is surely the problem of my mobile set or data cable. Then I wanna say those people that I have latest firmware in my phone (firmware version 5.63) and my data cable is nokia original worth 1800 bucks! So please first read the post and then make a comment on it as you have said “It all not so bad ,as told by pradeep it depends on handset as well as the location.”
I think your comment doesn’t justify the whole idea. May be pardeep right what he has said about airtel in his location.
I also have some bad experience with companies like nokia, lg, samsung. These all companies are not perfect and have holes in their policies. Their bad policies have to be bear by us i.e. customers.

All my windows xp with sp2 have latest driver and last but not least whenever I change my location or area then GPRS works fine with the same set then how it can be problem with my mobile set or data cable. The problem is 100% from their area specific networking which is unfortunatly my area where my house is.”
So please first read the post and then make a comment on it as you have said “It all not so bad ,as told by pradeep it depends on handset as well as the location.”

Hi Friend,
I am using Airtel GPRS with Month 600 buck charge.
I face one Problem. When I dial airtel gprs number .
Airtel Assign on Dynamic IP. But If IP address is range of 10.168.0.XXX (Here xxx means 0 to 254) this,
then i can not able to browse net. Only zero in IP range (i.e 10.xxx.0.xxx) create problem.
Any guy has solution or has any information about it.
Please mail me on bhavink25@yahoo.co.in

Hi ppl, this is Dhruv. Freedom to Surf? then please go for AirTel GPRS prepaid connection coz there u don’t have to pay the activation charges (Rs. 500/- and Service tax). I recommend go for AirTel GPRS prepaid connection, and just cost Rs. 12/- per day as i conversed with the executive over the helpline. I am using N-Gage QD. BlueTooth enable Cell is the must! Am already planning now better go for pre-praid rather going for Postpaid AirTel GPRS. Guys what are you waiting for???? Go, rush to the nearest AirTel gallery…am on my way already….lol It much economic, unlimited access, get download speed around 14kbps to 25kbps (depends on traffic) but the lowest is 8kbps (if is again a good speed compare to dial-up).

Don’t opt for a GPRS(Any operator)connection to connect your PC to the internet. They are too slow, the best speed you can get is 6KB(48kbps%8) and the practical speed would be 2KB(on AirtelGPRS). You can get a broadband 256kbps connection for the same price(DataOne, Hathway Cable). I have a Hathway Cable 256kbps connection and I get upto 30 KB speeds. As someone said, airtel really sucks, their only motto is to make money.

I am using airtel GPRS (mobile office) for about a month now. My phone is nokia 6021 (class 10 GPRS). I never got the speed more than 3.5 KBps(only once). The average speed is 2 KBps. I tried connecting even at 2,3 am in the night but never got more than 2-2.5KBps. I find this ok for browsing but not at all good enough for downloading. Moreover i observed that speed gets slower and slower if i am downloading files and i have to retry atleast 7-8 times to download any files > 1mb. I find airtel gprs very frustating. If u want just for browsing rediff or yahoo mail its okey(cool at 150 PM) but terrible if u want to download.
The customer care are telling me that u will get speed 8-10KBps?
is anyone in pune or MH circle is getting good speed? let me know setting changes?

Hi!i am a user of Airtel GPRS here in Kerala. Was previously a user of BSNL GPRS as well.
Well Airtel GPRS(now available in Kerala on prepaid) costs 250rs a month and BSNL GPRS costs Rs.349
Speedwise, airtel is much faster.I need around 10minutes to download on BSNL while it take around 4-5 minutes on Airtel.i did do a speed check on my BSNL and i got 9kbps while airtel gave me 20kbps on browsing and 38kbps while downloading.
Service wise, well BSNL service is very dodgy.it took a long time and 4 visits and a strong rebuke to get them activate the service.
Airtel activated my GPRS(mobile office service) the very next day i took my connection.
BSNL:the servers can go down very often and the scariest part is when its somewhere on a Saturday cos then it will be rectified only on Monday.while Airtel hasnt had a network failure so far.
And the Airtel GPRS plan in Kerala for Rs.250 ROCKS!!!
I would say this would be the ideal way for people stayin in rented places or people who dont stick to a permanent address and for hostel inmates. The can easily connect to the net with their computer with their mobiles.

Dr.Sam

Interestingly, Airtel charges 99/- a month for unlimited www (not wap) browsing in Bihar….
I was in Bihar for a week last month and I used a friend’s airtel phone to browse the net after hooking it to my notebook ….
All he pays is 99/- a month….the speeds were pathetic….not more than 2KBps (i.e ~16kbps) but then all in all a fairly decent solution for someone on the move….It’s a shame that they charge 6 times more in Chennai where I stay…

Before reading this post, please forgive me for my bad and really bad english and grammer.
I am a **BIG FOOL** because I have contacted ***LAMERS n’ MORONS**** for solving AIRTEL GPRS Problem. >:- ||
My Name: Pardeep
State: Haryana
Country: India
Connection type: Airtel 150 Plan (Postpaid)
Activated Service: GPRS (Mobile Office) for surfing Internet on phone and pc.
My Mobile Set: Nokia 6610 (Firmware Ver. 5.63 NHL 4U)
Connection Media: 3rd party DKU-5 cable (USB type) (Cost – Rs. 1800/- because its not Desi brand which costs Rs. 400/- to 500/-)
Modem: Nokia 6610 Data Cable.
GPRS Activated: December 2004
GSM (Airtel 150) Rental: 150+50 (For CLIP – Caller Line Identification) = 200/- Per month
GPRS Rental: Rs. 600/- (From December 2004 to August 2005), Now Rs. 300/- onward (As Airtel has reduced the price for the service in my state
Total Fix Rental (Excluding SMS and Call Charges): Rs. 800/- (Before), Rs. 500/- (Now)
Averaged theoritical speed (with nokia 6610 – Class 6 GPRS): 3 Kilo Byte Per Second (3×8~28kbps). But I get……..Read below to find what I get.
Problem: My GPRS Service is not working from past 4 months. Everyday, this service halted from 9 A.M. (Morning) to 12 A.M. (Midnight). Speed during this time is 500 Bit per seconds! (0.0625 Kilo Byte Per Second!). Its mean that a google defualt home page will open in approximately 4 to 5 minutes! Every day I notice that from 12 A.M. (Midnight) to around 9 A.M. (Morning), I get decent speed of 2.5 to 3 Kilo Byte per second hence a defualt Google home page will load in 7 to 10 seconds at that time!
I have contacted Airtel GPRS customer care arround 40 time while talking with different executive each time. My total talk time with them is arround 7 hours. See what they say each time I contacted them. I usually speak hindi with them but below I have typed my brief conversation with them in english. Every time they asked me stupid questions and can’t resolve my GPRS problem. Everything written in parenthesis is either an information or the instance taking place in my mind.
Dialing 9896212345 (Airtel GPRS customer support no. in my state) after frustrating from their bad service.
Airtel Executive – A.E. (Most of time some girl): Hello.
Myself (Pardeep): Hello mam, I have some GPRS problem.
A.E. : Ok your problem will be resolved. But before that, will you please tell your name.
Myself: Pardeep
A.E. : Ok Mr. Pardeep, Please tell your mobile no.
Myself: I told my mobile no.
A.E. : Ok Pardeep, From where are you calling.
Myself: I told my city.
A.E. : Ok. Which handset you are using.
Myself: Nokia 6610
Every customer care executive ask above stupid questions every time I contact them. Now……..
A.E.: Ok Mr. Pardeep, what problem you are facing?
Myself: Mam, I can’t access GPRS from 9 A.M. (Morning) to 12 A.M. (Midnight). The speed is so slow that even google won’t load in my mobile phone wap browser as well as pc during that time. Even sometimes phone won’t register itself on the GPRS network. There is no “G” sign on the mobile display. Sometime there is “G” sign but phone keep on registering during that time. My mobile set has latest firmware. I have windows xp pro with service pack 2. I have up to date device drivers for my phone modem as well as cable.
A.E.: Will you please tell what error message is displayed.
Myself: After some time my mobile set says “Connection lost. Please try again”.
A.E.: Will you please verify you service settings. Actually this is a temporary problem (they always call it a temporary problem which remains for 15 Hours!).
Myself: Verifying Mobile Office service settings while keeping the same phone in Loudspeaker mode. Mam, How could it be a temporary problme. If it is due to network congestion then it the problem of Airtel. They must upgrade their servers and network to fullfil the need of their customers as they are committed to give service for which customers are being charged every month. They can’t just halt the service for such a long periode every day becuase they have to give their bandwidth to broad band users. It is totally unjustification with dial up users.
A.E.: Ok, Pardeep sorry for that. Your settings seems OK. Have you ever flipped your mobile phone with your friends’ phone.
Myself: Yes (as I had done so with my friend having Samsung set).
A.E. : Have you ever flipped your sim card with your friend.
Myself: Yes.
A.E.: Have you ever changed your location to see the results.
Myself: Yes, I have changed my cell location several times. I have been even out of station. But no gain. Same problem returns every day.
A.E.: Ok sir please clear your phone cache memory by going to Main Menu > Settings. Switch off your phone. Remove your phone battery and SIM card. Wait for some minutes. Again insert both and then restart your phone.
Myself: Mam, I have done everything several time which you have told me till now. But there is no gain. It seems that it is your problem from server side or GGSN node.
A.E.: Ok Mr. Pardeep. I am unable to resolve your problem right now. I am forwarding your problem. You will get resolution of this problem soon.
Myself: How much I have to wait for that resolution. Because every time I contact you, I get the same answers. But no rigid response from your side. My problem is the same from past several days. Two months ago, I faced the same problem and now it has came back. What is your problem. Why can’t you guys give proper service as I am giving rent for it and its not free for me.
A.E. : Mr. Pardeep. I am agreed with you. But you have to wait. Any other problem.
Myself: No. Please correct the GPRS service as soon as possible (I am angry and frustrated now!).
A.E. : Ok sir. Have a nice day.
Disconnected…………
Moral of the story: 1.) I am fool as I have contacted Airtel GPRS customer care executives several time and each time got same answers from them. Believe me they are taught by Airtel that how to handle a customer. They have pre defined question (which they will ask you) and pre defined answers (which they give you every time).
2.) Airtel GPRS customer care executives are just LAMERS AND MORONS. They knows nothing because even a customer have more technical knowledge than those Lamers n’ Morons.
3.) Airtel Administration, Management and engineers are very clever making fool of its customers. They want only money form customers. So they have made Customer Care Centers to keep tangled their customers with those Lamers n’ Morons isolating themselves from end user (customer).
4.) Everyday I get 2 or 3 SMS from Airtel to buy their ringtones through 646 (it costs Rs. 6/- per minute) or some other shit offers. Hence they want only money and just money. What they can’t give us is a “Good Service”.
5.) I thinks everyday them make a Service Cut like electric power cut for 12 to 15 hours to fullfil the need of their broadband users. Its not just my problem but also a problem with users in other states like Himachal Pardesh etc. Even now at the moment of writing this article in wordpad I am connected to airtel gprs to open this forum in my opera browser and after downloading 35 Kilo Bytes my connection has gone down. One thing to remind you that it is not the problem with my any browser or software like firewall, download manager etc. I got the same problem from my friends’ pc living 2.5 Kilometer away from my house. There is even an airtel tower nearby his house.
6.) They can give you wastage of time, frustration due to bad service etc. for a monthly fixed rental. Whats a Hell !
I am applying for disconnection after writing this article and posting it to various forums so that people could know what the hell “Airtel” is.
GO TO HELL ***Airtel*** with all shit loosers like you.
Thanks for reading.

hi, I can agree with Pradeep. The customer “care” number 9896212345 is not a toll free number. So whenever you call that number you are paying for it.
I started using Airtel GPRS about 2 years back in Panchkula. At that time the speed was okay 2-3KBps. For more than a year I was in gurgaon and till januray I was getting a speed of 5-6KBps. Then I shifted over to cable. Now I am back in Panchkula and the speed I get these days is a pathetic 1.2-2KBps at max. I have an EDGE enabled phone but it only seems to work with a gprs connection here in Panchkula. So I guess if anyone is thinking of buying an EDGE enabled phone please do not waste your money with Airtel. I will try out BSNL tommorow and let you guys know about the speed. I was getting 5-6KBps on gprs (not edge) about 2-3 days back. So if in panchkula go for BSNL gprs. Dump Airtel

Well, here I am looking out for a problem I am facing to connect Nokia-6600 with AIRTEL GPRS. Whether I connect by Bluetooth or IR, while registering my computer(running WinXP Prof, SP2) on the network diaup stops with the msg “Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated”. Saw some solutions on internet, will be trying tomorrow. But if people have already solved with some simple solution, please post back. Thanks in advance. ~Venkat

Hi folks.
I agree with most of us here who complain abt service providers’ bad services. (they r not service providers but money suckers). ppl who seem too satisfied by the services (esp. frm airtel) seem their own representatives coz airtel has d worst customer care. and ppl talking of speeds of 8KB or more with GPRS are fooling around coz GPRS without edge can only give you speeds of 40kbps at MAX that comes to around 5KB theoritically (its always less as parity bits and error chking too count). I’ve a suggestion to make – lets all make a sort of an association and fight with these suckers together dragging them to consumer courts and TRAI. else these guys are going to suck our money forever. lets teach them a lesson as did reliance users. mail me if u want to fight back

Iâ??ve a suggestion to make – lets all make a sort of an association and fight with these suckers together dragging them to consumer courts and TRAI. else these guys are going to suck our money forever. lets teach them a lesson as did reliance users. mail me if u want to fight back. shivendrab@hotmail.com

Hi everybody i wen through every bit of the communication
My experience says that While airtel to attract customers intially provide 99rs/month connection it tends to become slower and also blocks sites as the user base grows.
I live in kolkata and it is impossible to browse now and custmer care representatives donot know anything about settings
I have a nokia 6600 and it always says access denied and is not allowing you to browse
AirTel Sucks
Do not go for ever GPRs on airtel in kolkata atleast
Please mail me on chandra.mishra@gmail.com or 9831275890
Please tell me about the settings for my mobile

Hi freinds
title= “sony ericcson k700 i airtel”
I am using airtel gprs ie mobile office on my sony ericsson k700 i . They charge me aroung Rs 600 for a month. Since i am using bluetooth my speed is restricted to 20 kb/sec and is pretty fast when compared to dial up. They offfer a downlad limit upto 1 gb and extra 1Re per MB, which is pretty good. Actually you need to get net on phone rather than airtel GPRS as that is different and allows only to download from airtel portal. I can help with setting on sony ericcson mail me at michaeldeepak yahoo com

It was indeed fun & education reading through various posts.
Am from Kerala, intent to go for net connection on my desktop PC with an GPRS / bluetooth hand set along with a bluetooth dongle and AIRTEL GPRS monthly subscription of Rs. 250-. Plan is to go for Sony Ericson T68i handset. PC operating system is Windows XP. Since I am new to this attempt, appreciate comments from anyone knowledgeable – comment on the suitability or otherwise of the intended handset, alternative least costly ones in market (no fancy camera stuff – I just need net on my PC, that’s all…), step by step configuration steps, etc. Appreciate a mail copy to knvntvm@yahoo.co.in. Thanks guys.

Dear Vasudevan,
I had a T65 but i never was able to connect to GPRS with that.for ur purpose,i suggest any phone like K500 will do.A data cable too.Airtel GPRS in Kerala….well we have a good deal.In most of the states other than Kerala,Airtel charges are based on data download.SO i guess we have a good deal.So once u get a phone and accessories, post up on the website and i’ll tell u how to connect.

Thanks. But data cable won’t do. Airtel signals inside home practically nil – need to place handset outside. Obviously bluetooth is required. T68i any probloem? Which brand is K 500? Could not yet decide on handset due to conflicting reports.
Thanks any way. Will keep posted.

Dear Vasudevan,
In that case the best phone for you is Sony Ericsson T630 or T610.Must cost around 6000-7000rs.I use it with a bluetooth dongle for browsing the net.Hey where are you from?actually T68 is the better of T65 with bluetooth and a color screen but i hear the GPRS software is pretty much the same.I am not so sure so I would say that T630 is a sure bet.

dear friends, look its very simple. airtel sucks. the customer care department, if you can get through at all will tell you anything to get you off the line. I have been told so many things over the last year you would not believe. 26 calls to switch on the mobile office connection, ha bloody ha. 77 calls to them since january complaining about the slow connection speeds. It is always a temporary problem they say. But if this problem is every day 24 hours a day let me tell you it is not temporary. I am a foreigner who lives here because i love india and its people, hey i even know when independance day is. but lets be honest here, India has to be one of the most corrupt countries in the world and most of the crooks are working for Airtel. If you want a reasonable internet connection you have 2 choices. The first is to move to Europe, the second is to go to BSNL and ask for their BB connection (line one i think). All the mobile operators are after your money and have little or no intention of speeding it up. Look, all this infrastructure costs money and we are all paying anyway so why should they do anything? Get used to it it’s here to stay Im afraid to say. Seeing as Im here let me tell you in Goa airtel mobile office is rps 5 a day but it aint worth nothing it totally sucks. some of you should get together and petition the company or arrange a strike where you all disconnect on one day. For this to be effective you will need thousands of people to do it. Good luck. You could try praying too.

After reading many comments in this page, I was quite skeptical about activating airtel gprs (kerala). I finally did so recently (my mobile is LG G1610, with GPRS & bluetooth. Have a bluetooth dongle on my desktop PC). Connection was not that difficult at all – sent an SMS to airtel mobile office and got the mobile set configuration details by sms and saved the same as profile 1. later “paired” the dongle with the handset and connected, works okay, though the speed is not very great. The connection says connected at 115.2 kbps, but the actual transfer rate is very low – say 2 kbps. Having said that, I think it is better than the sancharnet dial-up speed I have been getting. Sancharnet used to give me anxious moments – no action, but my meter kept on ticking. In this case, even when there is no action, I don’t feel anxious because my monthly commitment is only Rs. 250/-. that is indeed a relief. airtel gprs also gets busy – no network error is shown few times, but later on it becomes okay. am told by airtel customer care that it could be due to congestion in lines. i feel airtel needs to upgrade their systems so that they can accommodate more and give easy access to customers. hope someone in authority listens.
I do however have a problem with my handset – while on net, the phone switches off automatically. why is it doing, no idea. i am in an area where the airtel signal strength is not maximum – my phone shows the signal strength at the midway range or below, very rarely above the midway range. is it possible that when the sinal strength comes down, the phone switches off on its own? or is it a fault with the phone? in normal course when I use the phone just as a mobile, no auto switch off ocurred so far, only while connected to net. any guidance please? thanks a lot. knvn@sancharnet.in

hello all,
having used activated my Airtel GPRS using my LG G1610 handset, I am back here to report my experience â?? not a very happy or satisfying one. I experienced two major problems: (1) LG G1610 handset â?? this handset switched off on its own while browsing. No definite periodiciry for the auto switchoff or why this should be happening repeatedly. I reported the fault to LG and they very promptly attended and changed my handset with a new one – alas, the same problem continues. LG has apparantly now realised there is a bug on their handset and has asked me to select a different set (ofcourse at a higher price!!!, which I refused), and they have now decided to refund my full buy value on return of the set. I am going to get to return the set and claim my full refund in a day or two. So beware of this model LG G1610 which has bluetooth & GPRS. Before buying, take the intended set to use at your place for browsing and many hours to test the equipment. How come LG claim its capabilities, and the set fails while in actual use, I am astonished. Hope the consumers unite and make the manufacturers to actually perform on its promises!!
The other problem is ofcourse Airtel GOPRS – they activated my GPRS promptly in 48 hours. It worked for couple of hours (of course with my frequent phone switch offs!!!), on numerous times the connection was automatically disconnected, and on majority of the time, the connection speed was a bare 1 or 2 KBPS against the actual established connection of 115.2 KBPS. You have to wait long for even a very family page like yahoo or google to come on your screen (I have a dial-up connection also, and shocked to note that the speed in the dial-up is better than the Airtel GPRS… what are these guys??? unbelievable). And on the third & 4th day the GPRS connection was unavailable – the phone dials and at the point of “veryfing username & password” it stops and return an error message – usuall 721 “The other computer is not responding”. Called customer service, who suggested many checks, reinstallation of software, etc, but nothing to the effect. They even had the terimity to suggest that “the other computer” in the 721 error message was actually my “handset”. Nothing happened with the customer care suggestions. However, the next day it started working again without any intervention. Then I noticed – airtel disables your GPRS for couple of days after its unsatisfactory working for 2 days – but they never admit it, and try to put all the blame on “your” machine and settings claiming “all our systems are okay”. Again unbelievable – they are just interested in the monthly subscription, not give service. There is definitely some bug in the airtel GPRS also or why should it work for 2 days and off for the next 2 days (they must have found some ingenious ways to deny access to different subscribers on different days!!). Poor customers are made to suffer. So beware of Airtel GPRS also (the only happy note is that your monthly commitment is Rs.250 in Kerala, so whether it works or not you lose only so much. But the experience is really frustrating.
Having said that today is my last day for GPRS, and I do not intent to renew it – I will go with my BSNL dial-up, which atleast gives me satisfactory speed (ofcourse compared to the Airtel GPRS) to get my works done, though my meter keep on ticking!! Happy browsing.

Can any one give Hutch GPRS settings ? I am using a Motorola A-925 (simillar as A920, A1000). I have subscribed to Hutch GPRS but the customer services is clueless about the settings.
As Moto A925 uses the same Firmware as SE P800, it might work as well (not sure!).

I am using Airtel Live!. I hav subscribed to it. I pay only thirty rupees monthly rental. I can check my mail on the yahoo wap site. If you have a pjone with a html browser like nokia 7710 the gprs is really fast. It can open the http://www.yahoo.com site by the time you count five.

I have been using airtel mobile office at Rs 450 a month though it dosent compare to broadband however the fact the te download is unlimited more than makes up for this. In this scheme i can also use my computer in addition to the phone to browse the internet using a datacable to interface i think its wort it.
