Unwiring Pune project kick started

The city of Pune wants to become the first totally unwired city in India. The city authorities have said that they aim to become the first Indian city to have a high-speed wireless Internet network. And this is expected to happen before the Centre’s much-awaited spectrum policy is announced.

The project when complete would allow people living here access the internet from anywhere in the city wirelessly. They would be able to use their notebooks, PDAs and computers equipped with relevant hardware.

The “Unwiring Pune” project is being managed by the US based microprocessor maker Intel in partnership with the Pune Municipal Corporation.

Intel would be supplying the infrastructure for a wireless communication network covering the entire 280 sq km of the city. They would be using WiMAX, and Wi-Fi technologies for this network.
