India now has a GSM subscriber base of 12.1 crore customers
The mobile industry in India continues to grow at a rapid pace. The market saw an addition of over 61 lakh subscribers in March.
Bharti Airtel dominates the scene with 30.59% of the market share. The market sources said that the Indian GSM market now has around 12.1 crore customers.
This is up from a subscriber base of 11.5 crore customers at the end of February. The figures for the CDMA players in the Indian market are still not out.
Bharti now has a subscriber base of 3.71 crores. They added over 17 lakh users in March. BSNL is the second largest player in the Indian market with 2.74 crore subscribers. They added 19.84 lakh subscribers last month.
Hutch which is currently being acquired by Vodafone is the third largest player with 2.64 crore subscribers. COAI Director General T V Ramachandran said in a statement on these latest figures: “The spurt in subscriber additions and the overall growth in mobile subscribers during the financial year ending March 2007 has been possible due to industry initiatives, forward looking policies of the ministry and the enabling regulation.”
