VSNL Broadband at Incredible Prices through Cable

Internet over cable at 360 rupees for a 512 kbps line from Tata!

This is pretty awesome. Tata has started to offer Broadband Internet over Cable in Mumbai. The project is planned to spread to around 30 cities in the coming 2 years. The Tata Indicom Cable link from Chennai to Singapore is currently being worked upon and is expected be completed in few weeks time giving Tata the punch it needs.

The offering is initially planned to be on prepaid bases which is the norm in the cable internet market. The incredible part is the prices. Tata is reportedly charging just Rs. 360 per month for a speed of 512kbps. Nothing is reportedly mentioned on the data transfer limit. This is way below the prevailing rates in the market compared to other players.

ZDNet reports:

According to Tata, the new wave of broadband is being pursued with the objective of providing total connectivity. “We will pursue the triple play voice, data and video in this changing scenario,” he explained. Tata described the telecom scene in India as “vicious” and said it was necessary for VSNL to offer high quality services at the best price.

Well, I just cannot wait for this service to come to my city! This just might become the so called Broadband services killer… One of whom I have!

Hmmm…I was thinking of getting a broadband connection from Sify last month. Since they’re the only people in offering this in Mohali(Near Chandigarh). I dropped the idea, after going through your blog. Now I’ll wait for Tata. :)

Checked on Tata Indicom’s site for more info to tell Neeraj but it seems that they don’t have this scheme nor any prices for broadband listed. But then again – that’s Tata for you!

i think it will take some more time to get public. they must be testing in a limited area. this is wat i like about tata, they dont go public without testing. sify on the other hand was a mess in the beginning. it still is.

True broadband means unlimited downloads and uploads. Countries like US, England, France are going have ADSL reaching 8-10 mbps for affordable rates starting from 40 dollars a month to a max of 60 dollars a month. Why do we have limits on how much we can download, India must be the only country in the world which can have a broadband package having speed of 32 kbps. Come on guy bloody wake up 32 kbps for broadband is lower than the modem speed. The world evolves but India goes backwards. India Shining.

well i think right now tata indicom is providing very limited broadband services and that too at not “too” cheap prices. the package which i know of is that at 360rupees per month u get some limited hours and a download limit of some 300mb.
unlimited internet access without any limit to upload or download is at a price of rs 6000 rupees per month.
installation charges are rs 2500 for the first month.
well after seeing this offer i find Touchtel DSL offer much better but the drawback is that it is available only in certain regions of delhi like lajpat nagar.

Nope, not 999 now. Touchtel has cut prices, its now 600+99, pretty cool concidering the fact that sify charges 615+200 along with maintainence charges and still gives a crappy 20 Kbps, touchtel DSL, now renamed as airtel broadband gives pure 64 Kbps

Broadband is now gonna be real cheap….. Now ISPs like sify pay the govt(VSNL) for the MBs downloaded.Hence there is a restriction to the MBs oe could download on high speed broadband connections(Not so much high-speed though) But soon govt is going to introduce new bandwidth related prices according to a policy. After this the rates would be somewhat comparable to those in states.

SIFY should actually pay to the customers who take their connection. Right now I am in Delhi and surfing through sify, the system keeps dropping time and again…..its like dear old Vajpayeeji with his longer and longer pauses……..and then it surpasses Vajpayeeji and goes total phut!

Why are such ISP providers not banned through a legislation is beyond me!

I have subscribed for Data one ADSL some 40 days ago.Not yet arrived.I live in chennai,TN.Though it was expected as it is our dear indian govt’s project, but the pathetic thing is when ever i call the cust-service(none exist by that name)they manage to give me this crap all the time. It seems that there is a severe shortage of equipments ie modems. They only get 5-6 modem pieces every month.Don’t know it’s tru or not. They say that india is not ready for such huge project and doesn’t have the infra-structure for that.My cool 3K Bucks are with them.Waiting and don’t know when i will get one.But the biggest fear is wonder how the service would be after i get one.

Is this one of our politians stupid gimmicks. Are we ready for such big projects.DO we have to go throught his to get one god-damn Dsl connection.

    Hi Guys,

Here in Singapore, Starhub charges S$ 58 per month (roughly Rs. 1500+) for a 2000MB broadband cable connection. It is unlimited. No installation charges. They also provide the cable modem as well as free eqipment for wireless networking for one more computer at home. The service is excellent. Our people in India have no commitment towards the customer and hence all these confusions. What else do you expect when babus (instead of technicians) rule your country?

I have got a BSNL Dataone 256 kbps broadband connection. Though, I got the connection one month after I applied â??I think it is worth the wait. The download speeds are terrific. I think the level of BSNL service varies from one telephone exchange to another. The area covered by my telephone exchange offers relatively good service (by Indian standards) but my friends living in areas covered by other telephone exchanges say it is not so (I assume it is basically installation problems). Being a government organization, service is a word that is not found in their lexicon. No person ever answers the broadband help line 25555554 that is given to me. Nonetheless, I have not suffered from any hitches or line drops after nearly one month of usage â?? I usually contact the line engineer, a very helpful man for any doubts I have.

Overall ratings â?? I would give it a 4 star rating for the broadband connection speeds & a zero star rating for customer service.

SIR, I WAS USING YOUR DIAL UP CONNECTION SINCE LAST THREE YEARS VERY COMFORTABLY AND ON EXPIRY OF THE DIAL UP PERIOD YOUR SALES PERSONNEL HAVE MANAGED TO CONVINCE MY DAUGHTER TO GO FOR THE BROAD BAND CONNECTION. SINCE SHE IS A MCA STUDENT AND BADLY REQUIRED A INTERNET CONNCETION AND SOME HOW YOUR SALES PERSONALS ESTABLISHED A CONNECTION. THAT WAS THE ONLY DAY THE SYSTEM WAS WORKED LAST. AFTER THAT I COULD NOT GET ANY CONNECTION AND I HAVE DETACHED THE MODEM CONNECTION ALSO EXTERNALLY. I WAS DAILY CRYING WITH YOUR CUSTOMER CARE AND PROMPTLY I COULD GET A COMPLAINT NUMBER EVERY TIME AND TILL DATE NO ACTION IS TAKEN BY YOU. THOUGH THE MATTER IS MORE THAN THREE MONTHS OLD YOU ARE VERY PROMPT IN SENDING THE BILL AND YESTERDAY I HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER ALSO FROM YOU INSTEAD IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN VICE VERSA.
NOW WHAT I WANT TO SAY IS VERY CLEAR. I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BROADBAND. YOU ARE REQUIRED TO ACTIVATE THE BROAD BAND CONNECTION AND FROM THE DATE OF ACTIVATION I WILL PAY THE CHARGES. THE CHARGES SO FOR BOOKED IN MY ACCOUNT NEEDS TOBE INVESTICATED FOR THE MISUSE AND I WANT TO CHANGE MY USER ACCOUT NUMBER AND PASSWORD. IF YOU ARE AGREEABLE WE WILL SMOOTHLY GO FURTHER OR AS YOU WANT TO GO BY YOUR OWN WAY OF LEGALLITY AND I AM READY FOR CHALLENGE AND I WILL ALSO GO AGAINST YOU THRO’ CONSUMER COURT. ANY WAY I WANT TO HAVE YOUR REPLY TO MY E MAIL ID hebanker@yahoo.com. THIS MAIL IS FROM SIFY I WAY BROWSING CENTER FOR YOUR INFORMATION.

I have been reading the comments of the broadband story and must say that it was an interesting read. This is a classic example of a product (broadband service) that is much in demand but nobody seems to have a simple and easy solution to this. Being a technologist and a marketeer, I am not ready to believe that the problems cited by the potential users are insurmountable. Our so called service providers seem to be masters in ‘messing up’ things.

A few days back, I was also approached by a call centre executive offering the broadband of VSNL at Rs 360 per month. After I expressed my desire to immediately take the service and gave all the instructions, I was eagerly waiting for the same. But till date, there has been no response (almost a month now). I still feel that it is a better idea to use dial-up till we are offered real broadband from ‘good’ service providers. Comments are welcome.

I use Tata Broadband and I pay Rs.375 for 500mb per month at 256kbps.
The speeds are good and the billing is accurate.

I hope that I will get Touchtel near our area. I experienced one of the worst broadband services with TATA’s VSNL broadband service. The customer service is useless. The answer you get from them is reading out of a book. The service sucks. They charge for the services which are not rendered and doesnot respond to the customer once they receive their money. Until you pay they will be very responsive and call you everyday. BEWARE OF VSNL

Can some one suggest a good broadband provider in Chennai near Avadi area (exchange). Thanks much.

Some additional info that can be useful…
    - Quality of the service (speed and reliability without any break down)
    - How long do they take to serve you
    - Customer service

After reading all these History’s of our Net providers, i am totally confused, whom to approach and who will give the better service. As i am planning to go for Net telephony. Which service provider will be the cheapest. Kindly advice.

    hi,
This is to bring to your kind notice that i have applied for broad band connection on 25th Feburary 2006 bearing application no. 1551981, i.e today it is 3/4/2006. As on to this date i have not yet got the connection. And when ever i call up the sales excutive or the authroised dealer, they dont pick up the phone. If the service is going to be like, I will be very difficult for tata vsnl to survive, as there are some many service providers in the race, what it really counts is the service & commitment. If these 2 things are not there, i dont think they are going to last long.

    Thanks

People should be carefull while dealing with Tata Indicom VSNL connection. They take deposits in advance and then don’t connect. If you decide to terminate their services, they do not refund the money, because they know that nobody will take the trouble of going to courts for such a small amount. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL while dealing with VSNL. They don’t keep their word

I live in East Delhi. I have been using Sify broadband for the past more than one year. I am happy to say that I have faced no serious problems to date. The charges are I think the lowest in the country, Rs.650/- per month always on connection at 256kbps, max download limit is 1GB. I can barely exhaust this limit in one month, and the surfing speed is between 200kbps to 256kbps. My cable operator is very responsive and prompt. I think the effectiveness of any cable broadband is vastly dependant on the last mile cable provider; this is the person who either builds or destroys the reputation of any service provider, be it Tata, Airtel or Sify. So my advice is, don’t judge a service provider from their tariff list, but talk to the local cable operator and try to find out about his infrastructure, setup, knowledge about IT, and service backup. Best of luck to all.

But the limit for mb wont help any broadband provider much.

Whats the use even if i get 1mbps line that hav data limit of 300mb? Pathetic to say that it wont help much. Dont get excted as u wud get depressed soon.

If they offer us unlimited pakage with no downtime and priced nearly Rs.1000 to 1500 would be a perfect deal for all and i will instantly take it. No second thought.

But in reality atelast in India this wont happen soon.
