Tata Sky gets TDSAT notice for not broadcasting Total TV
Indian Broadcast tribunal TDSAT has issued a notice to the Indian DTH Service provider Tata Sky. This notice is in response to a petition filed by local news channel Total TV.
Total TV is demanding that Tata Sky starts broadcasting its signals on their direct to home service. Tata Sky had some time back stopped showing their channel on their service.
In their petition, Total TV had said that Tata Sky removed them along with another news channel named India TV. However, the DTH service provider later added India TV back on their service.
Tata Sky had responded back by saying that it was not possible for them to broadcast each and every channel out there on their DTH platform.
Incidentally, Tata Sky rival service provider Dish TV is indeed broadcasting Total TV on their service. Tata Sky further claimed that Total TV is not very popular in the market so it made little sense for them to broadcast that channel.
TDSAT said in its statement: “It has to be given a chance to be popular. DTH operators are not supposed to discriminate… This argument goes against the DTH operator.”

Tata Sky can’t decided on the popularity of a channel. Recently they removed some channels on their own without asking the subscibers. They should be careful not to adopt monopolistic attitude.

I fully agree with the observations of TDSAT. Tata Sky has no business to decide on the popularity of a particular channel. One they start showing it, they shouldn’t discontinue it without taking opinion of the subscribers.
