Indian Government considering abolishing roaming charges for mobile users
Newly appointed Union IT and Communications Minister A Raja has said in a statement that they are indeed considering the proposal to abolish domestic roaming charges imposed by mobile phone service providers.
He said while talking to reporters that discussions were still on in this regard. His predecessor Dayanidhi Maran had made a commitment to the people of India that they would go ahead with this plan.
Incidentally Maran had in a statement said that the roaming charges would be waived off as a “gift to the nation” on June 3 which is the birthday of his granduncle and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
The move is highly opposed by the mobile service providers in the country as it accounts for nearly Rs 4,000 crore in their revenues.
He added in his statement: “Such decisions could not be taken just like that, as after all it has been hardly four days since I assumed the new office.”
