Bharti Airtel first Indian telecom company to have 40 million customers
India’s leading private sector telecom company Bharti Airtel has created records of sorts by achieving a subscriber base of more than 40 million customers.
With this Bharti Airtel has become the country’s first telecom company to achieve this feat. They are also only the tenth telecom operator world wide to have such a large customer base.
This is particularly impressive considering the company has been operating only since the last 12 years. Even more impressive is the fact that they took 11 years to reach the first 20 million market and managed to add another 20 million within a period of next 13 months!
The growth rate is phenomenal considering they had a lead of around 2 million customers over hutch in March 2006. the difference is now a staggering 11 million customers.
This is important for the company considering Hutch has now been acquired by Vodafone, one of the biggest telecom companies in the world and they have set themselves the target of becoming the number 1 player in India in the coming years.
Sanjay Kapoor, president, mobile services, Bharti Airtel said in a statement on their achievement: “The 40 million customer milestone is indeed a remarkable achievement not only for us at Airtel, but also for the country as it clearly underscores the coming of age of Indian companies in the international telecom arena.”
