DTH Operators would be able to buy individual channels
This could be good news for the end customers as the TRAI has now said that the DTH service providers in the country would now be able to buy buy individual channels of their choice from the broadcasters.
Currently, they end up buying entire bouquets of channels from the broadcaster which in turn they have to force on their customers.
TRAI has also said that the broadcasters would now have to specify the rates of individual channels and the different bouquets on their websites.
They have however not specified a maximum price for individual channels as they have done for the CAS service providers.
TRAI said in its ruling which would come into effect from December 1: “All broadcasters will compulsorily offer all their channels on a la carte basis to DTH operators. Additionally, they may also offer bouquets, but they will not compel any DTH operator to include the entire bouquet in any package being offered by DTH operators to their subscribers.”
