In three words…

It is pathetic.

A week I have been using the new *revolutionary* desktop login client from Sify Broadband which is supposed to make my life easy and it has been a piece of crap for me. It is built using some weird technology with very unresponsive buttons.

Then, since it is an application, I cannot use simple web based scripting language to control it when I am not sitting on my desk. Then it practically functions like dialup dialup software. With time, the speeds get slower, so I need to logoff and login to get back to proper speeds.

Moreover, sometimes it even shows that I am connected while I am not because my net is simply not working. Therefore, if I put up a big download, I have to come back to my PC after every hour or so to check if I am still online or not. Therefore, it is a demotion from every angle.

From something that worked, we are back to something that works like a dialup. And no one likes dialup. And the best part is that the icon blinks in the system tray, another icon stays on the top of all applications on the desktop, reminding me that I am on Sify Broadband, which apparently does not make me a very happy customer in the end.

Please if you are listening and have some regards for what people want, get us the web interface back. Your login software sucks, and I do not like it at all.

When i saw a poster in my locality about Sify broadband, I was overjoyed. At last I can have affordable broadband connection. So I walked up to the place from where they are offering it. The person concerned is extremely non technical …… so much for support, I thought. But o.k. being myself a techie, I can probably handle it, so I took the form and started searching in the net about the service of Sify. Thanks to this blog, I have decided not to take. No where in the net I have seen a favourable review of Sify apart from their own site (one can read a few in mouthshut.com). And when I came to know about that 700 MB virtual cap …. Its all lost. I use open source to do every bit of my work. So my prime use is to download CD images….. which is not possible as it seems (also I do not know whether connection can be made with a generic open source client after the introduction of their own client). I have adviced everybody in our open source group, not to go for sify broadband.

A news is in the air that BSNL (Calcutta Telephones here) is going to launch Broadband for home users. I think I have to wait for that.

Dear readers and not so dear sify team,

I am writing this note with utmost frustation after using Sify’s new broadband client. The world is going in the forward direction but the Sify network is going backwards. We used to have a web interface for login which WORKED!!! but these wise guys have put up Broadband client which SUCKS!!! It makes me feel cheated as after every 2 minutes I have to check and see if I am still connected or not. Download is impossible as one should have patience of a monk to sit and watch the download completing successfully. I am Sify’s customer from July 2004 and this thing has really pissed me off. Connecting to the internet is no longer fun but has become pain for me.
If any reader is deciding to get broadband then think a thousand times before taking Sify coz your local cable wallah is the only technical expertise they offer to handle your broadband connection which is a shame.

    Take care,
    and Sify plz improve

    hi readers,
As mentioned by others, sify broadband is not good, since connection is not stable and speed varies too much. the biggest problem i have still now is that from past 3 months after a complaint lodged to the sify customercare, i am not able to run any application since they have blocked all using a firewall. i can only browse the internet using the webbrowser. the application like Norton antivirus live updation, bearshare and so on…. the customercare is hopeless and they dont respont to the problem.

I decided on the “UNLIMITED” connection and went for it.Being an ardent user of P2P’s and remote sharing, downloads approached 250 to 300MB’s a day. After 15 days of connection, It was terminated on cause of Overusage.NOW this was neither informed by Sify’s Marketing guy or the commmissioning guy. ANd then I realiased that it was not unlimited in all asspects(any aspect for that matter). On exceeding 150MB data transfer, “1 day is cut off” from the subscription duration!!!!!!!!.Now As a final result I have transited to Net4India where speeds are much much consistent and connection is constant and above all no download cap - Afterall wat is the purpose of having a dedicated cable and being restricted to download! Conclusion: SIFY is not for downloaders!

You had to wait harsha, ’cause new Sify BBClient is around 7MB, so, it needs 10 minutes on 128kbs to download (or nearly that). Be patience man.
Anyway, Sify is ok but Cable Operater is main problems!
PS: Im not Indian but I study in India and using Sify Broadband, they cheat me much much more!!! ^^

I hate the Sify broadband client too. What i hate most is that it opens Internet Explorer automatically and points it to the Sify MAX page filled with ads. Recently they have put pop up windows too which pop up every time i click refresh on any web site.

It looks like as if they are offering the internet service for free and showing us the ads so that they can continue providing us the free service. Also one other thing I hate is this 150MB limit.

  32. Anindya | March 1st, 2006 at 12:15 pm

Another thing, if anyone is having problems with MAC binding, use Macshift. Its a really good MAC address changer my Nathan True. http://www.natetrue.com . Its better than AMAC or Smac and most of all its FREE and works perfectly. I am using one Sify User ID in 3 computers. :D

    hi ppl,

i live in delhi, hav been using Sify for over a year, works fine for me. a lot depends on ur local cable tv guy who provides the ethernet network, sify doesnt own this guy and its a monopoly(ever seen two vendors for sify in a same lacality?). so if ur cable guy is a paan chewing, gaali spewing bumpkin … tough luck.
sify works best for light users, the kind who use the ‘net for checking mails, reading stuff online.
in delhi, depending on where u live u have other options like hathaway, airtel, MTNL etc.
for heavy users DSL is a good bet, but then again customer care is not something indian isps are known for … so if u find the going tough, u r pretty much on ur own

I am in Chennai and our home has Sify broadband (of course the 128 Kbps unlimited crap) for about 2 years and we never had any complaints. You know why??? Because my mom and dad don’t know how to use internet and my brother is too busy to use it. I was in the United States and obviously can’t use it. Now I am back home and I got the worst experience ever in browsing internet. Everytime I open the SIFY broadband client software, I get a dialog that says ‘Remote upgrade in progress. please wait…’ and then it dies. I get a troubleshooting in progress dialog and the message says that there are connectivity issues. No one including the customer care people in SIFY knows where the hell this connectivity issue exists. This had been going for 2 months now and in the past 2 months, I was able to get connected only a handful of times. There is no use in calling customer service since all they can say is “We are working on the issue and trying to find the root cause”. Miraculously the problem fixes itself and I get connected once in a while. What a waste of time and money… If I try to open the client software 10 times, I may be able to connect once. I am writing this with sheer frustration. If you are a current broadband customer, my condolences for you. If you are planning to get one, PLEASE DON’T!!! I am thinking of switching to a different service provider like Airtel or BSNL myself. Thanks for your time.

I’ve been using SIFY since the past 7 months and since then i haven’t had too many problems, but i sure do blame them for making such a crappy login software. And as everyone else said, i too have to go and see whether my connection is still on or not…and those bugging sify websites that open 2-4 minutes after login (SO SO SO SO IRRITATING). A few good things about SIFY is that it doesn’t need a modem like the MTNL Broadband. LAN Card is sufficient. And was actually amazed when i got a speed of 200kbps about 5 months back. I hear that such things happen when they are doing some sort of maintainance. Anyway, there are several UP’s and probably a lot more DOWN’s to SIFY Broadband, but SIFY still remains the BROADBAND to me. I just HOPE that we all get together and make sify a BROADBAND of the future…CHEERS!!!
