Airtel announces disappointing 8 Mbps broadband connection
It might not be well known but Airtel has been struggling to provide constant 2 Mbps connections to their customers.
They have also more or less stopped giving double speeds at night to customers who were getting it till recently.
However, the company has now announced their plans to offer 8 Mbps connections with limited data transfer facilities.
They are likely to offer a package for Rs 2,000 for a download of 7-8 GBs. This is not at all impressive as at these speeds 8 GB of data could be downloaded with in guess what… 3 hours!
P V V Srinivas Roa, Chief Marketing Officer had this to say on this new offer: “Airtel customers will no longer have to wait for a video to get buffered while watching streaming videos. They would be able to download a 5 MB music file in five seconds flat as compared to 160 seconds on a 256 kbps connection.”
Now the point is if we are not going to be able to use the package to do heavy downloads for more than a couple of hours… what would we do with these kind of speeds? Check emails? Airtel needs to answer that question.

I’d take a higher bandwidth cap (or no cap at all) over high speed any day. It’s sad that we can’t have both.
BSNL’s Home 1800/3000 plans with 10/20GB caps (upto 2Mbps) are far better, the “night unlimited” sure helps!
i guess the plan can be made useful by offering the same customers night unlimited at at least 512 kbps.

I applied for an 8mbps connection on 23/11 on the 2222 combo plan. The phone was installed on 1/12. The wiring for the broadband was done on 2/12. The broadband was finally activated on 7/12. Guess the download speed on my 8mbps line…..
317 KBPS!!!!!
Stay away from Airtel folks. Looks like they provide 300+kbps regardless of whether you have a 512 kbps plan or an 8mbps one. No doubt they will soon be the first to launch 16mpbs broadband in India, with…. you guessed it…. 317 kbps download speed.
